It’s not a joke. Perhaps you can evoke
These feelings with a smile,
a wry twist of your lips; you may try.
Perhaps you can even laugh,
Bitter, cynical, disparaging –

But it’s just a screen, a cloud of smoke -
So you may push it back a while.
Laughter can also be a way to cry.
Or it may be a prop, a crutch, a staff;
A means to funnel the pain that’s raging;

A way to patch the little thing that broke.
You could just view it as a trial:
Something to be borne or something to defy.
You could reject it as a golden calf:
Be critical, start disengaging.

You could shrug off the heavy yoke
And simply turn, becoming hostile.
But – won’t that just leave you high and dry?
Leave you just a single half?
Isn’t this hard war worth waging?
