Why am I starting this thread? Glad you asked.
I have PMed both Rabbit and cariad with what I thought were legitimate questions and they both chose to ignore me. Cariad ignored me twice and the only reason Rabbit didn't match that is because I could no longer PM him since it seems he has taken away that privilege for us. I did end up getting an answer to 1/3 of my questions in the Site announcements which I hadn't seen before I sent off the PMs. So my reason for this thread is to get an answer hopefully from an administrator.
Now my question and/or suggestion was prompted by a thread from someone I consider a great asset to this site, moptop. She in nowway is involved in my inquiry only inspired it by her Farewell post.
She suggests, and it is true, that there are those here who never seenm to make any posts of any substance. They are only concerned with post count. Their post count is made in the fun and games section. It is no secret that I too have made very many posts in the Fun and Games section and I like that section. Still I would like to ask if that forum could be eliminated from the New Posts search. That way for those of us here who are interested in contributing to threads of substance don't have to wade through post after post involving the Fun and Games. If others agree it would be nice to see your comments here as well.
Since the administrators seem to find it easy lately to ignore my PMs I am hoping they will answer this question here out in the open for everyone to see.
I must say I just learned about Rabbit and my deepest sympathies go out to his family. I now understand why he didn't answer me and I sincerely apologize for anything I had been thinking about him especially since in the past he always was very prompt in answering my PMs. My apologies to all involved but in my defense it was early last week when I sent my first PMs.

Widget and cariad are both gone for personal reasons. They have been for a bit now. They will be back in another week or so and I'm sure they will get with you then. I'm sorry I can't be of more help to you, Warbaby.

tessaThanks Tessa for the reply. I guess I picked an inopportune time for a post like this but the suggestion and request I believe are still valid. Maybe another suggestion would be for "an automatic out of office" reply to a PM if any of the administration is gone and we try to contact them. I don't know when Rabbit was struck but I believe it was after I PMed him. Either that or someone else turned off the option that allowed us to send PMs to him. That is why I sent the second one to cariad again.
I have no idea how sophisticated the software used at this site is but I have to believe it is rather extensive since it seems to allow the forced changing of passwords on a timed basis. Hopefully it is capable of eliminating the Fun and Games forum from the New Posts search but if not then we will survive. Again, it is only a suggestion.

Thanks Warbaby for your considerate reply here. Rabbit was out of contact a few days before his death, so that's why you weren't contacted by him. And your idea about the "out of office" automated reply is a good one. I will most definitely make mention of it.
Thank you!

WarBaby, I must say that your suggestion does have some merit, at least in my eyes. I also would like to be able to see new posts without having to wade through all the threads in Fun and Games.
That said, let me tell you what I do that is at least a partial solution to your request. I subscribe to the individual Forums, and everyday all the new and updated threads are sent to my email. This allows me to actually keep up with the stuff that I want to track, and allows me to ignore the stuff I have no interest in, like Fun and Games and Personals. This is not a perfect solution, but it is a workable one.

WB, I know your question has come up at an inopportune moment, I hope you don't feel bad!
I do find it a very valid point (and thank you for saying I'm an asset. Gosh.).
I wonder if there is some means (when administrative functions are back to normal) to set up and save your own personal searches (without having to go through the Advanced Search every time), or extended search functions which allow you to exclude various sections. I too would really love not to wade through masses of Fun and Games when trying to find the new posts that do interest me.
Rhabbi - good idea; the only issue with that being that any new threads of course will not be subscribed to yet; and, personally, I really do not want my mail box filled up.
I hope that everyone will soon be able to come back and help us. Um. Except Rabbit, of course.

moptop, I subscribe to the Forums, not the threads. If you go to each Forum there is a forum Tools button that allows you to do this.

First I must say I agree with moptop about not wanting my mailbox flooded since it is limited in size. Then allow me to ask; if I subscribe to a forum rather than a thread will it show up in my User CP along with the subscribed threads? There are certain threads I do want to remain subscribed to as well as maybe some of the forums.
Still I have to believe that it would be much simpler if a simple sort could be setup to eliminate the Fun & Games from the New Post search so anything new would not be overlooked say in some forum I may not have subscribed to.

I get about 15 emails a day from here because I keep track of a lot of Forums, but I only get one email for each Forum. This shows me which threads have been updated for that forum, and the threads that have been updated. Unfortunately, this does not show up in the User CP. I wish it did because it would make things a little easier.
As for the size of your email box, why not get one at gmail? It is completely free and all but unlimited in size. This makes things a lot easier.

I wonder if it would be at all possible to break down the New Posts link into separate Categories.
This way when you click on the link new posts it would be separated by folders to each part of the forum.
Or even to have the posts set up so that Fun and Games are always last on the list, regardless of when the posts were made.
I don't know how difficult this would be to do, I would imagine that it wouldn't be easy, but just a suggestion on my part.

The "easiest" solution would be I guess to just remove "fun and games" from the updates list.
I dont subscribe to anything really but I think I would do as Rhabbi does and subscribe to the forums and not just a thread.
My mailbox isnt limited in size or well hmm 100Mb is not a real limit.
bad timing but good suggestion WB
Not sure how everyone is scanning the new posts...
I check the site about once every day or every couple days if possible. When I do, I look on the right hand side of the screen and scan the categories that I want to read, and look left to see if it is a thread I wish to read. Because I use Firefox, I am able to open each thread in one window with multiple tabs, thus not needing to keep track of what post I last wanted to read, I just open new tabs till I get done paging through the new posts search. Then I set about reading and responding to each tab that contains the thread I wanted to read.
By doing this I am able to quickly skim over the fun and games, and I don't have to worry about deleting any unwanted emails from my email account.
With Rabbit's passing, I am not sure there will be any changes in form function until tiger can find a suitable replacement.

Warbaby, I am sorry that you received such poor service from the admin team. I have attempted to find a way to give an 'out of office' reply to PMs but yet to discover a thing to click for that. The best I can do is put something in my signature, which I know is of little help if you don't happen to notice it there.
Anyway, thank you for your suggestions, I hope you will appreciate that there is alot to think about at the moment, beyond , and more urgent, than possible site improvments, and I ask for your continued tolerance as I delay in replying to them.
Thank you

Warbaby - just returning to your original question. I once asked Rabbit if it was possible to exclude F & G from post count - or have an additional count running which did not include F & G - the furry one said 'no'.
F & G is a valuable part of the site, one where relationships are formed. An important part of this site is the human side, it helps to create an environment where we can discuss more sensitive issues. Some like F & G with a passion, some dislike it with an equal passion. My personal view is that F & G, like the rest of the forums, ultimately belongs to the members, although the staff keep the structure in place to facilitate what happens. If the members wish to use F & G for non challenging games, then that is their decision. If someone starts such a game and it is not popular then the thread will simply sink.
However, we have been discussing ways, other than just post count, of recognising members. This is now approaching a final draft...so watch this space. I hope you will like what we come up with.

I do hope that this isnt a pop at me and the amount of posts I have done since the registering of this account in june.
For reasons only known to myself and to Sadistic1 I was not able to post outside of fun and games. And now I do.
I have had plenty of opportunity to post elsewhere...offering help and advice as and when needed but I havent...again...due to reasons only known by myself and S1.
I appologise if any of you have felt threatened by my presence over there

cariadCariad I, of all people, was not running down the F & G forum. I personally like it. I was only asking if it could be eliminated in the search when one clicks on the "New Post" link. I in no way was suggesting eliminating it or even down grading it. For those who don't do the fun and games at all it would make it much easier to find threads "of substance" if that is all they are looking for.
I don't know if you saw it or not but we almost lost a great asset to this forum and one of the big reasons was all the F & G posts. I didn't want her to leave so I though this may be a remedy for her and others like her.
I certainly agree that F & G has its place and value. I have met some very lovely people there I would not have otherwise.
I hope I am not being misunderstood in my suggestion. My suggestion may not be possible but it seems to me, one with an untrained eye, that using a simple search criteria could possibly exclude that forum from the "New Post" search.
Thanks for your reply.

Was most certainly not a pop or anything else at you or anyone else.
I get complaints about everything - is really rather nice - on balance all parts of the site seem to be equally bad. This particular complaint has been rumbling since before crazy girl was here, and I suspect will continue to rumble after we are both gone.

I was having the exact same idea lately, but felt it would look too much like a blank put-down of the Fun & Games board, and that wouldn't be in line with what we as Staff should be doing I think. Many of the people I really like on this site I met at F & G, and it has just as many moments of deep and inspired depravity a any other forum.
