I know there is a way to subscribe to a thread and have it emailed instantly/daily/weekly. Is there a way to automatically subscribe to every post that one has posted to? Of course, Oz wouldn't want to do this but I don't post that much and I ask a bunch of questions that I need answers to. My problem is that I forget to click the "subscribe" doo-hicky so it takes me forever to periodically check and see if I have gotten an answer/new answer.
Second question: On the drop-down menu you can choose "no email notification". What does this mean? Is there a way to be notified when you log into the site? Thanks

To delia,
Many kind thanks.
While I'm here, I ought to report another problem. I was writing a Private Message to another user, my login name secure at the masthead, but when I hit either "preview" or "submit", the system acted as if I had logged out. I logged back in again, but my PM was lost. This may be one for the Deep Geeks. (interesting that this is a compliment in tech circles!)
Thamks in advance. I wish you well.

When you log in...remember to mark the "remember me" box.....The site reads cookies and if you dont mark that, it wont recognize you and it will log you out.
Now I know why I dont bother to post things. While posting my pics I somehow clicked on or disabled all pics, emoticons, and avatars for my viewing when I log into here. If ANYYONE knows what I did and how to reverse it I would greatly appreciate it. I have looked all through the User CP and cannot figure out what I did. Once again thank you for anyone who might be able to help me
In the User CP you find on the left side the control panel. One of those links is called "Edit Options". Once there. scroll down a bit to the "Thread Display Options" where you can select whether or not you want to see signatures, avatars and pictures. They should be checked (or those you wanna see anyway)
If that doesn't help i don't know what's wrong.
Thank you but thats not it they are all checked and still I cannot see anything

The usual response to these kinds of things is to log out, clear your cookies, then log back in. Then check to make sure those settings are correct. Beyond that, I'm lost, too.

Someone please tell me how to quote!
I can press the quote button and highlight text but I don't know how to transfer that onto my own reply.
If you start your reply first how do you then quote?
How do you quote from multiple sources and still keep a hold of your own reply?
Thank God I can at least 'submit new thread'!

If you press the quote button, it begins a reply with the full post you are quoting between [-QUOTE=poster-name] [-/QUOTE] (minus the dash, which I added so you can see the code.)
Erase the parts you don't want to keep, add your own comments before the [-QUOTE] or after the [-/QUOTE]
If you're moving the quote to a post in another thread, after getting the quote, cut the entire thing, go to the thread you want it in, and paste it. Again, add your comments before or after.
If you are in the middle of the post and want to fetch a piece in to quote... highlight and copy it. Either click the button that looks like a dialogue button (it says wrap text in quotes if you hover your mouse over it) and paste the quote between the two bits of quote-code. Add an =name if you desire... or just type [-quote] and [-/quote] before and after the part you're quoting.
I sometimes split a long quote into parts so my comments are interspersed. That's just a matter of typing [-/quote] my new comments[-quote] between the parts you want to separate.
Get it?
Got it?
Good!!

So, you type on the quoted piece in the first place like so...
If you press the quote button, it begins a reply with the full post you are quoting between [-QUOTE=poster-name] [-/QUOTE] (minus the dash, which I added so you can see the code.)
You can add your own text anywhere on the original text; you just have to make sure you get rid of other people's words you don't want...
Erase the parts you don't want to keep, add your own comments before the [-QUOTE] or after the [-/QUOTE]
If you're moving the quote to a post in another thread, after getting the quote, cut the entire thing, go to the thread you want it in, and paste it. Again, add your comments before or after.
I need to practice that, I would lose original post...

They are set so that you can't delete them. There are many reasons for this, most of them administrative in nature... the admins can see the posts even if you fully delete them. We can also delete them if there is a compelling reason. However, like posts into the forums, we ask that everyone please take care when posting--once it's up on the site, its out there for public consumption...

I have periodic revolving problems with this site (telling me I'm not logged in when I am, not allowing me to review, not allowing me to post or PM, etc.). The problem I've been having recently is not being able to reply to reviews or edit my own reviews. This is the response I get when I try:
Unable to add cookies, header already sent.
File: /home/bdsmlibr/public_html/stories/reply.php
Line: 4
My browser is Safari.
One of the main causes of issues like this is due to not "checking" the "remember me" box on logging in. Typically that resolves the majority of the issues.
Also when it comes to editing posts that is only allowed within 15 minutes of placing the post. After 15 minutes only site Mods an Admin's can edit.

I am also having this problem.
Never had it in 5 years as a member until about ~2 weeks ago when I noticed it as I went to review a story.
In the forums I seem to have about 10 to 15 minutes before I find I am logged out again and find this very frustrating when trying to post comments.
I have cookies on as I always have, I check the remember me box everytime, Java script is on, everything is as it has always been as far as I know. No new software installed lately.
Would be nice to find a solution.

Well I found out how to fix the problem.
Leave the site then go in to your cookie manager and delete all BDSM Library cookies. Reboot. Come back to the site and log in again (check the remember me if you want it too) and you should be good to go.
I got to thinking that when nothing has changed then it has to be something that is changed by the site not my computer and the only thing that could be was cookies.
I was right. Hope that helps others.

Thank you for explaining about the editing. This must be a fairly recent change, as in the past I have gone back and edited reviews up to a year later, even changing the score.
Where do I find this 'remember me' box? I am automatically logged in when I navigate to the site, so I'm not seeing any boxes. Also, I note that not being remembered doesn't keep me from creating new reviews, just from replying to existing ones. This seems odd.
And I did not receive notification of your initial reply, even though I see that the notification type selected is "Instant email notification".

Firefox works for some, but the site is designed for IE & runs best off of it. Again, Firefox users will say they run the site fine on Firefox, but we definitely recommend IE.
As for plug ins... I don't think the Library requires anything crazy-- ironically, chat requires the most (updated Java, cookies enabled & sufficient quantity)...

When I try Pics, no categories contain any images.
When I try Models, I get an error type page titled "Index of /models", a link to the parent directory, and some information about perl, Unix, and Apache, which I assume is hosting/design information that I should not really see and so I think it might be a bit pooched.
I am running Opera for a browser, so I do not know if it is a browser issue, or if I need to fiddle my settings.

Absolutely only given the option to soft delete them. If you need a hard delete, please send a PM to Torq or I and we'll take a look at it. More times then not, soft deletes are messages that end up being needed to sort out conflicts, drama, and perception discrepancies. Hence, they are only soft deleted so that if needed, an admin can recover them as "evidence."

Ok, we've been messing w/avitar settings for 6 months because SOME people can't restrain themselves & upload these RIDICULOUS sized avitars that fill the screen & then some. If people could restrain their compulsiveness to have the largest avitar on the boards, then we wouldn't have to put restrictions on at all.
Now, as for the current bizarre re-sizing... I assume Tiger or Torq finally found the right setting that held to max the sizing out. I recommend if you distaste the resizing, you simply fix & re-upload your avitar. Would take about the same time that complaining about it does *laughs*... or you could just leave it morphed & complain... but I guarantee that due to the abuse of the avitar sizing by some folks, it isn't going to be increased any time soon. If the re-sizing is due to a different issue, I'll figure it out & look into it.
In the meantime, c'est la vie.

Glad you like it though - i love classical erotic art. And the way she is looking down, hiding behind her hair, is just pure serene submission.
Took me a long time to decide on an avatar - i liked a lot, but knew i would get sick of them pretty quickly.
Sorry, way off topic. Maybe i should start a thread on the stories behind peoples avatars.

I hate how grainy and distorted the avi's look now. I have tried to resize mine in a manner that makes it look better and reupload it, but it wont work.. seems to just stretch it back to the size admin feels looks best. Some of them look downright hideous the way they have been stretched, particularly if they were smaller than 150x150 to begin with.
Thread closed matter being handled, see site announcement thread.

When I'm on a page for a while, then if I try to navigate around the site I get logged out. This is problem if I've been composing a PM or a long post. Sometimes I can log in, hit the back arrow, and retrieve my posting, but sometimes the back arrow just takes me to the "you are not logged in" screen. I recently started backtracking before re-logging in, copying my text and then pasting it in after logging in, but sometimes, once I get the first message that I am not logged in, I can't even backtrack to my message to copy it.
Today was the second time in two days this has happened, and it's very frustrating, and it's happened a bunch of times before.
I know that people spend a lot of time maintaining the site, and I'm sorry to complain, but I wonder if there's a simple fix for this? I don't think I'm the only one this happens to.
It happens whether I've checked "remember me" or not.

12-16-2008, 02:31 PM
That is weird, rachel... I honestly haven't had this happen when I check the "remember me" button, so I don't know what to offer you as a suggestion... temporarily why not do cntl+c right before you post, that way it saves it just in case you need to re-post?
Maybe someone will have had this same experience & be able to offer up some advice??

This happens to me all the time.......lol...annoying isn't it
the fast and dirty fix is having two windows open....
one to the window you are working in..
the second open to ..currently active users....at the bottom of the forum....which seems to keep me logged in all the time.....
hope that helps

Well, it'll time you out. 15 min & you're out. So maybe that's part of it. Then when the server recycles, if you're posted, you're out. And, a third reason... have you paid homeage & your monthly blackmail $$ to the server yet? That's usually a root cause of why it doesn't like certain people...

LOL..yeah i know it times out after 15 minutes...thats why having two windows open works..it seems as if being on currently active users....keeps you logged in....and doesn't boot you.....
If your making long posts, PM's or in chat....its a slick trick...lol
and...... is that what that thing on the side of the laptop is for...the slot for money???.and here i though it was a coffee cup holder...lol

Okay, it happens... and the way to recover your post is to log in on that first screen that's telling you you're not logged in. If you do, it accepts the login and finishes the activity you were trying to do.

I was going to suggest what Oz just did as it's happened to me many o' times. And whatever you do, don't hit the back button- you're guaranteed to lose everything. Though once in a while instead of logging me in and finishing my action it gives me a white, blank screen.
I wonder if there's a setting I can choose to not be timed out after 15 min?

Well, on some screens relogging in helps and on some it doesn't. When I'm posting to a thread, USUALLY relogging in helps - it doesn't take me back to what I was doing, it takes me to a blank screen but I can hit the back button until I get to my post again. On PMs, though, after I log in and try to backtrack it just takes me back to the you are not logged in screen.
I try to remember to copy my text before I post, but because this only happens for long posts and not for short ones, it's just hard to remember!
Thrall, I'm not too computer savvy. Could you please explain about the two screens in more detail? I'd really like to try that.
Thanks for everyone's help.

ok...let me try....
you log into the forum...at the bottom there is an area that shows everyone who is on line...
click on the part at the upper left of that area that says "currently active users"...it will take you to a screen that shows you who is on line and what they are looking at...
shrink this screen...so its open and running...
now..open a "second" library window...you should already be logged in ........use this second library window to use the forum, PM system, and chat....
let us all know how it works for you hun.....hugs....i hope that helps.....

Same is happening for me, as well as on the main site.
Database Error Database error
The BDSM Library database has encountered a problem.
Please try the following:
* Load the page again by clicking the Refresh button in your web browser.
* Open the home page, then try to open another page.
* Click the Back button to try another link.
The forum technical staff have been notified of the error, though you may contact them if the problem persists.
We apologise for any inconvenience.
It's a vBulletin error, I wonder if the admins updated their vBulletin recently. I've run into the problem a few times on my forums.
Could also be an SQL database error.
Due to control panel as well as the main page being affected, but the forums being fine, I'd guess it has to do with the User Stats, New Posts, or Last Visited calls.

thrall,
You can also get to that page by clicking on "Who's Online" (last item in the "Quick Links" pulldown menu which is the 2nd button from the right at the top of the page on the main menu bar). This was the only way I knew to get there till you told us your way. But, do you think (or know) if it will work the same way as using your directions? I too have a lot of trouble losing what I've written.
Another thing I've been doing lately which seems to help ('cause I didn't know the second window thing either, Rachel) is to periodically shrink the window I'm working in down to the taskbar, then bring it right back up again. This seems to act like a refresh that starts the time over again. I haven't paid any attention to whether this differentiates on pms/posts/etc.
This is probably the thing to try if you've forgotten to open that second window-----which I will do.

So please stop posting that caertain things don't work-- we know, we're monitoring the issue and trying to get it resolved. Once it is, we will SURELY post that we think it's back up & then y'all can let us know what *isn't* working at that time...
Till then, there will be many things (PMs, adding friends, etc.) that just aren't working.

Does anyone know how to get to the old main page from within the site? When you click on the large font BDSM LIBRARY (red or white letters at top left of each page) it takes you to a page that was orange when the site was still down and is now red. Then, you have to click "enter here" to get to the old main page that had so much info on it. I'm lazy. I want to be able to go directly to it and by-pass the red page from anywhere within the site.
And BTW, thanks to everyone who worked so hard and for so long to get the site back up. :ty :ty :ty :ty :ty

I don't know about the other software you're thinking of, but AVG will run auto scans for virus, spyware, etc.
I was told it's a good idea to runa separate firewall and I go ahead and run windows defender too. With Windows stellar record on security issues, I'm not sure what it's worth. lol

Personally, I use 'Avast' and have never had any problems. It's free, it updates on a regular basis (sometimes 3 or 4 times a week), it scans email and websites.
I teach and assess IT Technicians, as well as buliding and repairing computers, and I always install 'Avast' in preference to Norton or McAfee. They cost money and you have to buy updates every few years.
AVG or Avast are better options - and they're free!

I've been using AVG for about a year now and have had no problems with it. It updates automatically, can run scheduled scans, and handles emails with no trouble. I keep the Windows Firewall turned on, but I also use the Spybot S&D Resident/ Tea Timer, which can protect your registry from unwanted changes. I seldom have the need to access risky sites, but the couple of times I have the AVG has stopped any attacks.

Since a couple of weeks now, I've had an error-page coming up when I try to edit a review.
Funny thing is, when I open a Forum page in a new tab, the problem's gone and I can edit my heart out. Also strange is the fact that later, when I again close the Forum tab, I still can edit.
After having closed my browser and come back, I again am unable to edit and have to open the Forum page to get rid of the error.
I'm using Firefox as a browser, and recently was upgraded to the 3.05 version. Maybe that has sumtin to do with it? Seems I for some reason can no longer add my cookie to the jar...
Ah, almost forgot: the error reads "Unable to add cookies, header already sent.

Another thing: yesterday the site seemed unreachable for a while. After I got back on, I saw that when clicking a story title, the story index (where you can see the chapters and the 'review' button) was showing-up with the HTML code visible.
Since 11PM GMT+1, that is solved, but now there's no reviews visible. Stories that have reviews still show the amount of reviews and their score, but the replies have all vanished.

On my 'main' PC, I've been using BitDefender for almost 5 years now. I recently built a second PC with leftover pieces (I upgrade my hardware almost every year) and on that one I've tried "AVG Internet Security 8.0"
I must say that it is an excellent antivirus program: easy to configure, clear and understandable interface, a good and fast engine which doesn't weigh too heavy on the RAM and regular updates (every 4 hours).
Both BitDefender and AVG are considered the top-two A-V software, but since BitDefender doesn't have a free version (bar the regular 3-month trial), there shouldn't be any hesitation about which A-V to choose... ;)
By the way, steer clear of Avira (the one with the red umbrella), as that one is leaking like a sift. And I speak out of experience.

The free version of AVG along with the free version of Spybot do a great tandem protection. There are known issues of the two programs bugging each other out on some older computers, but generally, those are two programs I'd suggest for anyone.

I actually have a version of free avast that was downloaded for me last year, by a computer tech, which does a scan of my computer, about 30,000 files or so, every time my computer goes into screensaver. If it finds any viruses it removes them, and then does a rescan, until the computer is deemed clean. I'm very satisfied with it. It is much better than Norton, the antivirus protection I had previously. I got an adware virus when I was using Norton.
Hope that helps.

By the way, steer clear of Avira (the one with the red umbrella), as that one is leaking like a sift. And I speak out of experience.
JJ
I've been using Avira for a year now, do heavy torrenting, never have my firewall up, am totally opening myself up to idiots hacking me now that I say this ... but have yet to have any issues with it at all.
I usually use AVG, but decided to try Avira out on a recommendation from a techie friend and I have to say that for me, I like AVG better, but Avira does a bang up job.

I've posted several stories but today I filled in all the required fields and when I click on "send the story" it gives an error, saying I have to provide at least the title and a description. Those fields, however, are filled in.
Has there been a recent change?

As you may remember, I am having recurring problems doing things on this site. The most recent (meaning current) problem is that I cannot read reviews. When I hit the 'review it' button for a story it takes me to the normal review page, but there are no reviews on the page. There is a summary of the number of reviews and what the numerical scores are at the top, and an invitation for me to review (or sometimes to be the first reviewer), but no actual reviews to read.
I haven't tried reviewing since this started (to see if I can read my own), but this should be enough of a problem for you to work on.

I had Avira on my PC for 2 weeks (in combination with ZoneAlarm Pro firewall) in-between the expiration of BitDefender 2008 and the arrival of the 2009 version.
In that week I had the 'good fortune' of running into a Vundo virus, plus a whole horde of troyans which came in thru the back door...
BitDefender 2009 was the only one, by the way, that could get rid of the Vundo, as it's a tough little bastard. It's also the only A-V (for the moment) that runs without hassles on the new Windows 7 OS...

Ok. Just to be clear...
These are problems with the ENTIRE SITE. That means anything that starts with www.bdsmlibrary.com is going to be affected!!!!
PLEASE STOP SENDING THE ADMINS PMs!!!!!
a.) Often,we can't read them.
b.) WE ARE FIXING THE PROBLEMS AS QUICK AS WE CAN!
c.) WE KNOW THINGS ARE DOWN!!!!!
Sending us PMs does NOT help the problem! I have 31 in my inbox this morning asking about various parts of the site being down. YES, we know they are. YES, we are working to fix them... PLEASE just have patience!
I know everyone is addicted to this place (in varying degrees, of course) and we are working hard to get it back online. But we can only work as fast as we can on it... bitching, complaining, PMing, emailing, posting, etc. about the problems aren't going to get the place back to "normal" any faster. In fact, that sort of thing slows us down because we have to pass through it to get to what we need to get working on.
So for the time being...
No, we can't delete your acct. Chill. Life isn't going to collapse because you are a member here for an extra week.
No, I can't fix your sig block. If you can't fix it, I can't fix it.
No, I can't change your name (see Torq's thread in Headlines re: tags in any case).
No, I don't know why your posts aren't "taking." Could be the fluxing in the site. (see my previous comment in this forums area about backing up your posts before you post them if you are concerned about it)
No, I can't give you access right now into areas that you want access into. Trust me, I will when I can.
No, chat is NOT working. I know this. It might go up for a while, then come back down. No, I don't know when it's going to "work right," nor do I know [insert name]'s YIM/MSN handle. Whoopsy, forgot to write that down in my important black book.
We're trying to work as fast as possible. We're trying to be jovial & light-hearted about this all, because really, in the end, the site will go back up & be working in "normally" within a week--nothing to call TMZ (tabloid) over.
In the meantime... PLEASE PLEASE continue to have some patience!!!! If you REALLY can't find anything else to do, I will give you the name of a sub/Dom that you can chat with & beat/get beaten... might make you feel a bit better *laughs*

No, a sticky thread is a normal thread, started by anyone, which is then made into a 'sticky' by an admin, because of its contents. So it stays at the top (sticks!) and thereby makes it easier for everyone to refer to. It might be a list of names, or a set of links, or something similar.

Since a couple of weeks now, I've had an error-page coming up when I try to edit a review.
{snip}
I'm using Firefox as a browser, and recently was upgraded to the 3.05 version. Maybe that has sumtin to do with it? Seems I for some reason can no longer add my cookie to the jar...
Ah, almost forgot: the error reads "Unable to add cookies, header already sent.
File: /home/bdsmlibr/public_html/stories/review_edit.php
Line: 4"
JJ
Please note that I'm replying to JimmyJump, NOT to Torq.
This problem is not limited to FireFox. I'm using Safari 1.3.2, and for me it additionaly affects my ability to respond to other posters' reviews. Clearing cookies (at Torq's suggestion) worked for me, but everytime I leave the site and return I need to clear again. Since this makes it tedious to navigate to/from/within any other site, I've simply given up on responding to reviews, which is unfortunate.
Am I correct in remembering that FireFox and Safari share a common origin?

I use the latest version of AVG on two computers and Avast on a older computer. I also use Jettico Firewall version 1 on my XP and Windows Firewall on my Vista. I ran Norton's antivirus and firewall on my computers and ran into many problems. No problems since switching to the free programs.

i have alot of experience with avg. the free one is pretty good but be carefull. its not that good when it comes to trojans and the realy nasty virusses.
i have had loads of virus scanners in the past. and i have to say. avg free is good. and norton is pure evil.
norton tends to ignore all trojans. ( i had 74 and norton said it found nothing)

I'm beginning to come around to the same thoughts. I've used Norton for years, still using it on my main computer, and haven't had too much trouble. But it does ignore some things. That's why I also use Spybot S&D (free) and a new one, for me, MalwareBytes (also free). I've found that nothing really catches everything, but using multiple programs can pretty much eliminate the vast majority. And I'm using AVG (free) on my two older machines, which are really not used too much. I'm experimenting with them, though, and AVG, in combination with Spybot's Tea Timer, has caught some problems before they could install themselves on my machine.
I used to use Ad-Aware, too, but I don't much care for their latest revisions, so I've stopped using it.
