When you first started out in the world of bdsm what toys did you have were any of them home made. As i am pretty new to this and dont thave a shop near me to buy stuff and also not really wanting to spend a lot of money does anyone have any ideas for home made toys which can be made from things lying around the house or things that are cheap to buy.

Lots of every day things can become perfectly good and "effective" toys...... wooden spoons, clothes pegs, masking tape (doesn't leave a residue on the skin but is bloody sore to get off). Dressing gown belts make for good bonds, nice and soft on the skin - depends on how nice your Dom/mme is feeling I guess :)
You don't have to spend a fortune on toys to have fun, just use your imagination around the house and I'm sure you'll come up with lots of innovative uses for different things lying around.

Metal shower rods. Make great spreader bars. We took one from our old place, drilled a series of holes along the length, and put steel O-rings in each hole. Whatever restraints you want to use can be run through the O-rings at whatever distance you wish :)

Dog collars are great--something wonderfully humiliating about wearing a collar that's normally on a pet. I like clear medical tape--no residue, won't rip off any flesh, but does a great job of taking off hairs. Belts, of course--for anything from binding to gagging to whipping. Clothes pins, alligator clips, hair clips--all great for nipple and clit owies. Brushes make great paddles.

The average house is just full of fun stuff ;)

There is a thread here about alternitive flogging devices. It has some very good ideas. Also blue painters tape is good for a lot of things. You can buy rope at a hardware store, don't get one that is too thin, it will leave marks. There is a course in the dungeon about rope tying.

You don' t have to spend a fortune on toys. There are so many convenient items at home that can be easily "altered", as some of the above posters mentioned. and then, of course, the do-it-yourself toys, also from some unobtrusive sourse. Rubber floggers are a favorite of mine... or the uses chopsticks and kebab sticks can have. or sandpaper/scrubbing material. I often get dreamy when wondering through a kitchen or hardware department, seeing sooooo many possibilities to have fun!

Almost all of my toys are homemade.
I cut two straight branches from the tree outside, and the ends, when held by my extra-thick hair elastics, make good tit presses. I have clothespins with five lead fishing weifghts hanging from them for my nipples, and a locking pipe wrench (it's heavy!) to clamp down on my clit. I have the broken off and smoothed leg of a chair for my cunt, or there's the usual assortment of handled household implements (my favorite is the hammer handle, though the broom handles, screwdriver handles and flashlight handles are good too.) You can get a roll of clothes line fairly inexpensively too, and with a couple of plant hooks set firmly into the studs in the walls or ceilings, you have a ery inexpensive setup for suspension.
My youngest child just turned one, and so went the bay bottles. The baby bottles now get filled with either hot or ice water and get pushed into my cunt; the bottle brush gets inserted into my ass or my cunt, or rubbed against the clit (if you want to put it in the ass, get a separate one, to minimize the risk of infection.)
I have a large wooden hairbrush; the flat back is a great paddle; the ridged, 'easy-grip' handle is an easy grip...by my cunt walls! A branch cut from the mulberry tree out back (I cut a bunch in early spring, strip them of their bark and soak them in the bathtub while I'm taking a bath. They make great switches/canes, or you can get the long bamboo stakes for tomato plants at your local nursery/plant seller.
Next time you walk thhrough the hardware storem, use your imagination, Lots of things in the hardware store can get me wet just thinking about them; the same with home improvement warehouses, and kitchen supply places.
The grocery store is another place. Cucumbers and carrots are the first things that come to mind, but small baby potatoes in the cunt can feel like vibrating balls when you walk around with them on there. So can brussels sprouts, if you want something smaller. Long baking potatoes can be washed, peeled,and carved into a variety of different shapes, or if you're large enough, they can go in whole.

A "toy" can be anything that you use wisely. Honestly, my Master can walk into a room without a single "store bought" sex toy and work with what he has. In fact, a great place to find "toys" and "tools" is a kitchen store. Especially if you are into the extreme. Marks depend on two things... the force of the action and the type of flesh you have (and where you have it). You can welt and bruise from a licorice stick, if you have enough force and tender flesh. For instance, I don't bruise easily. Though, I bruise on my legs more than my tits. And, my Master is VERY harsh. But a lighter touch or more tender flesh (even the color flesh) will make a difference. As a general rule, canes usually do pack a punch. But, it all really depends on those two things. My advice, start out slowly and less rough and work your way up to a doable point. And then make note of it for next time. And, that doesn't just pertain to bamboo canes, that pertains to just about everything.

I am a great fan of homemade toys and actually have quite a large collection. Most of the toys I made were for use with a female but they can be adapted for use on males also. Cutting boards make great paddles. Ping pong paddles also. I bought some rubber balls at a dollar store and small dog collars. I punched a kitchen knife through the rubber balls and made a slit all the way through and then pushed the dog collar through the slit in the ball and voila, a ball gag that buckles. I also visited a plumbing supply store and bought several different kinds of toilet bowl rubber flappers (you know the piece that fits into the hole where water flows from the tank into the toilet) These make the greatest harnesses to hold vibrators and anal plugs in place. I just added lengths of ribbon to the slots on either side at the top and used the little chain that is already attached to the bottom to hook it on to a belt so it will stay in place. My master likes to tie me spread eagle and then put this on me and use the remotes to control the intensity of the vibrators he puts in the harness. He will sit in a chair in front of me and read or write and just let the vibrators drive me crazy! Just dip over and over until you get the desired thickness you want.

Toys...hmm, a broad, flat sided wide wooden brush, a sanded paint stirrer, a few hand made floggers, spreader bar, pony ride, tit press...add some different size ropes and chains, few locks, a crop, couple vibrators, lots of clothes pins, butt plug, A535 rub...
Now I am just trying to work on some sort of sturdy suspension rack :eek:
