leather roses

Does anyone know how (or where to find out how) to make suede roses? Ive seen them for sale as gift items on online shops but I've as yet been unable to find any clues on how its done. I've used up most of my scrap leather with trial and error (mostly error!). I just cant quite get the effect right and they end up looking sloppy, amatuerish or unrose-like... which is simple unacceptable :)
