Sparkling, beautiful salt
A charred, blackened face
Grey, charcoal, covered eyes
To watch pain slip away
Slithers down the broken cheek
Next to the busted lip it grows
Into more than heart and soul can bear
And breaks off, falling, to the floor.

Malnourished, awkward knees
The child’s only mourner
Delicate, softened, salted chin
Cowered, lonely in a corner
Curled up waiting for the next
Bruise to appear upon new skin
To tear the fresh flesh up, to break
A heart and try to douse a spirit.

Gorgeous, wondering eyes
Hidden wrinkles of the truth
Terrifying horror hides
Beneath the sweet smiles of abuse
Staring straight ahead past life
Thoughts of nothingness flood in
Until that’s all the child has
And it never finds itself again…
