Thanks Tojo! Phew. It was kinda reassuring (as someone who has sometimes been called a wannabe) that I don't have any of those characteristics!
I agree equally with the sub ones. There are so many who say that they would love to be broken and seriously injured - surely there's only a handful of people who are genuinely that extreme.
Ooo I'm so tempted to call aussiegirl a slut right now, just for fun! But I can't, she's too nice.

I know it's not about a wanna-be, but this thread reminds me of a skit Steve Martin did back in the 80s when he was doing stand up. He said something about meeting some nice people back stage one night. They asked him if he was bi, and since he had taken Spanish back in high school he said yes. Great they said why don't you come to our house after the show, we're having some S&M people over. Great he says, spaniards and mexicans!
If you're a sub that thinks you can tell another sub their Master isn't a true Master because their Master doesn't do the same as yours, you may very will be a wanna-be.
If you're a Master that thinks you can tell another Master he's doing it all wrong because he's not "strict enough" you may very well be a wanna-be.

I don’t want to seem like im attacking anyone, but it’s hard enough for people to find a reliable environment to learn and share their thoughts without feeling as though they may be mocked. Sure, some are playing a game and need to be mocked, but others are simply missing the knowledge and experience to enable them to relate to other wannabees and experienced alike

There is a world of difference between a new person and a wannabe. In this sense, we use "wannabe" as someone who puts themselves forth as someone who already is, does not admit their lack of experience.
It is the dishonesty that is looked down upon, not the lack of experience.

Thank you for your response...and I agree wholeheartedly with your definition between the two.
I worry simply because the issue of finding an appropriate first base or outlet, whether online or irl, can be daunting and I have lost two good friends because of another boards "closed" nature.
That said, the atmosphere here is far more inviting...*feels drawn in already*

So many great short answers here but a word of caution is in order.
We all started out as wannabees so it is no real shame if you study learn and grow into your version of the real thing, and trust me that take the rest of your life.
Wannabees are dangerous because they don't have any experience but the real danger normally lies in what I call posers/abusers there are only there for causing pain and taking advantage

Yes I used to be the wannabe for sure. Wanting to explore this world and what is in it. I was very lucky to find a girl that was willing to explore with me, and that lead to me not being a wannabe anymore but, I am still far from an experienced Dom. I guess after another 10 years or so lol.
Experience comes with time and practice like in all things.

some good words said here... i think it Is important the difference between a wannabe and a newbie.. newbies can make the same mistakes, but do so out of pure inexperience.. and then correct them selves as they learn.. wannabes just do what they want and assume they must be right... just my thought..
