This one is based upon Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness'

Entering The Darkness

They were conquerers
And for that you want only brute force,
When your strength is just an accident
Arising from the weakness of others.

This invasion of deepest Africa
Is just robbery with violence,
Aggravated murder and men going at it blind
As is proper for those who tackle a darkness.

There, engaged in a noble cause
I saw the grass growing through his ribs,
The uncanny, yet fateful moment
That accompanies fantastic warfare.

Stricken to death by the touch
Something like the emissary of light,
That which resembles a lower form of apostle
As if nature herself, had tried to warn off intruders.

Men that writhed in the extremity of despair
At this picture of massacre,
As the taint of some corpse
Our actions, blew.
