The IM programs MSN and yahoo can now chat together. I have tried it, and it works. You will need the latest versions of each program.

The article here (http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Microsoft_and_Yahoo%21_link_their_instant_messagin g_services) on wikinews.

Microsoft has an article that tells you exactly what is required. I have pasted the link, but I am unsure if it meets the hotlinking requirements or not. Mods, if I am in error please remove the link.

this is fine ---guess hotlinking is not clear yet---Hot linking is ---linking to a picture on another site ---that causes this site to go to that site and open the picture ----this causes extra uses of bandwidth on both sites as this site has to contact the other site and request that the picture be opened every time that thread is opened ----yes this does save hard drive space on this site ---but hard drive space here is not an issue----Most sites do not allow hotlinking----some that do --are like photo bucket----the down side to this is if the member suddenly removes the picture from that site ---this site still tries to contact that site---but all you get are red Xs instead of the picture that was there

what you have just done is simply place a link to another site --and that is fine as long as it is not your personal site ---or it is to a pay site or a site you have to join---- we are not here to drum up membership to other sites

for that and pay sites or personal sites ---there is a web master link exchange link at the bottom of the forum ---

Try using GAIM. It does a great job of integrating many chat clients such as msn, yahoo, mirc, icq and so on. It is a free download and you can find it if you google GAIM. Unfortunately it does not support realchat, which is too bad because firefox and my antivirus software does not like realchat.

It also has the advantage that if you have more than one hotmail account that you want to chat from or yahoo account then you can also have them running at the same time using GAIM.

One of the requirements is you have the most recent version of both MSN and yahoo installed. Once you have that, you must read and agree to the licence agreement for each program. The links above take you to those agreement's. After you have agreed and have installed the lastest versions, restart the IM programs. Once restarted, you can now add people from those other networks to the particular IM program you wish to use.

Simple right?

P.S. Rabbit, thanks for reclarifying the link thing for me, I was still a bit unsure. I believe I have it understood now.

Well sort of. You do actually have to agree to the licence agreement for the new function first. Then it should work.

ok, I have both new versions but it doesn't seem to work...I downloaded them when they first came out so I must've agreed to the licensing for them to work...

chattel even though you agreed to the licence when they first came out, you will still need to do the agreement for this function. Its a beta function, and therefore not something they release with the regular program. IM me with one of the icons under my avtar, and I can walk you through it.

I just did this earlier tonight after a mate told me about it. I love it! the only drawback however is that you cannot send files if you are logged on msn, and they YIM, or vice versa.

(oh yeah, and not all of the smilie faces are interchangeable)
