Out of curiosity I was wondering what our readers like in their stories. Do you like plot and well developed characters or pure masturbation material?

If we wanted nothing but pictures we wouldn't be at this site. The imagination is the most powerful aphrodisiac of all. But a bit of pictorial assistance is always appreciated. Most of us, however, primed with a picture in our minds, attempt to enlarge on it and make it our own. That is why we write descriptive prose. We see a picture and elaborate her (in my case) in our minds. This is the beginning of character. Then we walk our character around our seen. This is the beginning of plot. Eventually we want our characters to take off on their own. This implies change. Thus character development. For each and every one of us, the exact mix of things that excites us varies and therefore each author's writing is a bit difference.

Ultimately, that which is the most expressive is the drawing. Unfortunately, that is the talent that the fewest of us possess. But the drawing allows us to summon that exact demon who graphically arouses us.

Sex without plot turns rapidly in boring anatomical description.

Plot without sex, well without BDSM as we are here, is just another story at the bookstore and does not fit the expectations of this site's readers.

I'm like a young child: When given the choice, I want both. Dessert AND Cheese; Applepie AND Jelly... Sex serving the plot, and plot serving sex.
And never forget, the most enjoyable part is the foreplay!

I wonder where you put 'Expression of Feelings and mood': in sex or plot part ?

i voted for the 'it depends' option. Sometimes i want something detailed and with a lot of character development and at other times i have to admit that i prefer something a bit more base and gritty. Perhaps the main difference for me is how much time i have; the notion being that the less detailed more urgent ones tend to be shorter. i suppose it's like any reading material though, sometimes i like epic novels which take a long time to read and in which you get fully involved and sometimes i like something which doesn't take long to read. i don't like them so long and detailed that it starts to become a bit pretentious and removes itself from a BDSM theme altogether.

I voted equal parts, but in truth it depends on my mood, although I tend to prefer a good mix most times.

All humping and bumping is as boring as all silly chatter and over narrating in a story, a balance needs to be struck I find.

My own stories do have a lot more narrative than is healthy at times, but I try to make it paint a picture as well as inform the reader of what's going on.
When I come to the sex acts themselves I do turn a bit lewd with it, not much mention of, breasts, vagina, or penis, it's all tits, cunt, and cock, I have been critisised for this lewdness elsewhere.

I like to include as much dialogue as narrative, sometimes more chat that rabbit as it were.

I have written two stories, (not posted here yet), that have no narrative at all.
The whole thing is told in the words of the characters as the tale goes on, it's bloody difficult especially portraying sex scenes with just the words of the characters without being able to tell the reader what's going on.

Anyway good friends enough crap from me.

Well, this thread caught my eye. It reflects many of my own thoughts about this website.

As a reader:

If a story is well written, with good character development, a decent plot, and the writer has shown some knowledge of grammar and punctuation, I’ll start to read it. If it is the same old tie me up tie me down that is so common in the genre, I stop. If it is fantasy or sci-fi, then I’ll read it, but it better be damned good to keep my interest (I cut my teeth on Harlan Ellison et al).

I rarely read stories for mastubatory excitement, and when I do, I tend to go for something like “The Paris Craftsman” or excerpts from novels, which tickle my mind more than they tickle my crotch. A good mind fuck is a good mind fuck, it’s just that I can stick a video in the machine and relax and not have to worry about scrolling down …
Okay, so maybe I’m a snob. But if you read on, you’ll see where I’m coming from ..

As a writer

I first came here because I wanted to see if anyone was posting my work without permission – they were not. I read some stories, found some good and some bad, I checked out some of the reviews, and thought that might be what I am looking for – a way to test ideas and styles, and see if they work for the reader. And so, I submitted one or two to check out reader response.

For that is my primary interest: I want to know if my writing captures the reader’s mind, if he/she believes in my characters, and at the end, feels satisfied.
By the way, I want, need, crave, the reader’s feedback. How else can I improve my work?

My intent when crafting a story is to titillate and excite, to arouse interest and desire, so the reader will say “more! <pant pant> I want More!”
I have been told my stories are too soft, and that a harder edge will give them more readership – I take that as a fair comment. And in some as yet unpublished pieces, I have done so. Nevertheless,

I do not write for one-handed readers. Sorry, but that’s the truth.

For me and my partner, BDSM is foreplay, not the climax.

Two recent stories I have enjoyed: “An Apology” by kittenfemme, and “A New Life” by woodsman’s game. Both stress emotions rather than sensations … but then, what are sensations if they do not trigger emotions?
I have tried to read “The Jade Pavilion” but it just has not captured my imagination. Sorry Boccaccio.

And that’s as close to a review as I will post on this site, because I’m here to learn how to improve my craft, not to criticize others.

Thanks for the posts, everyone. The main reason I posted this thred and poll was to see what kind of stories out readers like. I like plot myself.

The main reason that I have an interest in what people are reading is because I may try my hand at a story. Not that the readers specifically dictate what sort of story I will write, but I do want people to read it so it is a sort of a suplply and demand issue - for lack of a better term.

This kind of story is not exactly my genre but I have an idea so I figured I would write it - or at least attempt it. I usually write fantasy/adventure novels but this might be a nice change of pace.

Thanks again for the input. :)

If I just wanted a story with a good plot, I could get that at the public library. Naturally, I read the stories here for the sex. But still, A story with no plot at all is a bore...kind of like a porno movie. It's nice to read something that holds your interest andkeeps you wondering what is coming next.

to much of one is a very boring read
You just have to look at mayor to slave to see what I mean.
The author has way to many charitors to keep track of and it reads like this

and this was happing to that and while that was happing this was going on etc etc

it is just to hard to read and follow

Plot is important if I am going to read far, but sometimes I'm just in the mood for some stimulation.
In that case plot becomes secondary; however, if the writing is poor, not very imaginative and full of cliches, I can't get past those problems to enjoy the content.

Stimulate my mind with your ideas. Stroke my imagination with your descriptions. Touch my innermost thoughts with your words.

That's what arouses.

I'm one of those "It depends" types, but in my case it depends not upon my mood, but upon the author's strengths and weaknesses.

I ALWAYS have to have sex (that's why I'm at this site). Some writers are lousy at character development and some just don't bother, but still write great sex scenes. I think of them as 'comp tapes', enjoy them, then move on. Usually if I've sat down to read and review ten to fifteen stories in a night, a no-plot is the ideal story for me to finish with (if you know what I mean). I always read (and review) without my pants on.

When a story is also engaging on a plot/character level, this is a welcome plus, but it requires a LOT more skill from the author and so I think of that as a happy bonus, rather than a requirement.

(Special to Finding_Fantasy: I PMed your hubbins a few days ago and, among other things, bemoaned your absence from the Forum. As I have progressed in working my way through the past three months' threads I see that I was, happily, mistaken. It's good to see you around. Your level-headed and thoughtful contributions are valuable.)

In my view, the plot is the most important element. The context in which the sexual activity takes place is far more important (to me, anyway) than the sexual activity itself.

Not that I object to a well written sex scene, of course. But it's the context which makes it work for me. Or not.

I hope to get some writing done sonn.. (crosses fingers) wether it for here on on my novels.

Sex, or Plot? The eternal question. Sort of like, Why did the chicken cross the road?
e.e.norcod (nice s/n btw, and is the cod part anything like a cod piece?) offers the most salient view on the thread's question, i.e., visually oriented can view much elsewhere.

At bdsmlibrary.com, it is up to the reader to use his/her imagination in hopes of following whatever the writer offers in their submission.

Personally, the use of character and plot richly enhance whatever fictional sex might be portrayed and hopefully that also engages the reader. Sometime this tact works, other times it does not. But hey! What was it that Lincoln used to say on the subject of relating to others?

I've noticed that the forum thread with the biggest reponses are those called "Favourite picture" and "Personal Photography".

Yes, every good public library has picture books, even the bdsmlibrary!
