Uploading Pics

Dear all,
This might seem like a very silly question but I can't seem to upload a pic so that it appears next to my messages, etc. Well, I can upload them but when I click on 'save changes', a message appears stating that the upload was unsuccessful. I'm not completely dumb, only partially and I was a professional photographer in a previous life, so any advice would be appreciated.

Google "making Avatars" and you will find instructions on making avatars to place next to your comments. You may have to install special programs.

I found my avatar on a free avatar site.

I was told to go to 'user CP' and I could upload my own photo that way. Again, your help is apprecaited.
