HERO –ZERO

Once again the Hero moves through the lines
Floating alone in the times.
He reaches friendly lines
Where he takes his place at the end of the line.

The hero sits silently as he prepares
Shinning his amour all dented and ding
Wondering what the tomorrow will bring.
He smiles, he knows,
There are no tomorrows only today’s,
In a hero’s world where he lays.

In so short of a time he hears them call
“We need to fill the zero line, go get the hero he’ll make the stand.”

Some call him leader,
Some call him fool;
He knows he is neither
Just an ordinary man,
In extraordinary times.

Too soon he hears the call again
He raises and answers;
Though this could be the last.

He remembers back to when he was young
How his armour and wings shone bright
He smiles and recalls
How proud and tall…
Then someone yells “There’s a breach up ahead”.
They all stop and turn to watch the hero move.
Without a word the soldier asks if his time has come
Knowing that if he survives,
Once again
He will go to the back of the line.

The cut goes deep,
Knows this time it’s for keeps.
He drops to his knees
He wonders why.
But he knows,
He is going to die.
His past flashes him by
As he asks of himself will anyone cry.

The hero goes back to the end of the line.

Master_Rob,

The hero falls, there are few who weep,
But countless more who his memory keep
Alive in their hearts as time tells his story
This faceless corpse rises up to glory.

Thank you for the inspiration. I'm seldom moved to reply in this manner-but in this case could think of no other way.

Master Rob I'm not sure how to respond except to say I am weeping as I type. You touched a piece of me I thought had died when I left the army.

So many of us who have stood on the line know what you have written, so many I know now are broken or dead. Ahhh death the final reward for the eternal warrior, I crave the peace it will bring and an end to the dreams that torment. But today you made me feel proud, thankyou.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

You asked me if I could believe you wrote a poem and not only do I believe you wrote a poem I believe you can write poems in general. You will have to clarify a little something for me later, but I think you know what I mean. Hugs and kisses always

An excellent poem Master Rob, and it is true. I am glad you decided to share this with us. Don't worry, the hero is may die, but the memory will always remain.

Wow.

This doesn't only hit home for those who have served, but also those of us that know and love them.

*says a silent prayer*
