Laughing, hold on, if we give all the secrets away how will appear knowledgable?
Sighs, okay then.....the basics.......
Command number one. Be yourself and have fun and respect your fellow inmates.
Command number two. Read the room rules which are on the page just before you get into the room. They are there to make chat a pleasant experience for everyone.
Command number three. Don't panic when you have no idea what is happening in there. It can be impossibly comfusing when the room is very busy and you don't know anyone. Try and key into on conversation and follow what is happening, or find someone who is just talking a little in the room and chat to them. If they are not talking at all, it could be that they are hiding away in whispers or sleeping, either way they will be completely unresponsive.
Command number four. When the room is busy it helps to put the name of the person you are talking to at the start of the line; so the line might look something like...
cariad(CC): gregsta: welcome to the chat room gregsta, the M&M machine is over by the fridge, please help yourself.
You can do this by either typing the name, or by clicking on the last entry of that name in the chat stream, and it will automatically appear.
Command number five. If you wish to whisper to someone, aka pm them, double click on their name in the list on the right hand side of the screen, and type in the popped up window. They will then be the only ones who can read what you are typing. Please note guidance in the room rules about asking before whispering.
If you see an entry in the main chat stream which says "name says to you....." it means that person has just whispered to you. You can either reply to them in the room, or if you wish to whisper back to them double click on their name in the list on the right hand side and open the pop up window - see above.
Command number six. Many people like to personalise their font colours. This does make it easier to spot who is saying what when the room is busy. Near the bottom of the screen is a button with a 2x2 coloured grid, click on this and choose away.
Command number seven. Profile. Any public information which you have saved in forums will appear on your profile in the chat room. You can change this by going to the profile tab at the top of the page, but any changes will only be there for that session, and you will have to re-enter them each time. This is also the place to select an avatar to go by your name.
Command number eight. To emote a line aka blue writing, i.e. to get something like "gregsta offers cariad some chocolate ice cream" type '/me offers cariad some chocolate ice cream".
Command number nine. See command number one.
Looking forward to chatting with you....

Laughs at Confessor - but seriously I posted those because they were asked for. An alternative approach, and the one I took is step one, two and nine, missing out the middle bits!

cariad,
Only having been in the chat room one time I appreciated reading your list of commands. However, without going to the chat room to find out what you mean by the one above can you explain in a little more detail what the portion in bold means. Does it mean before entering the chat room I should have already contacted anyone I may want to whisper to or do you ask the question in the public area of the chat room before whispering? Or maybe it's neither of these guesses.
Thanks.

FYI gregsta...another way to do this is to type the colon on your keyboard..ie : and then speak..it saves a bit of time when the room moves quickly.
I saw you in chat in the wee hours and you watched, i am sure, another newcomer...we in chat (for the most part) are a friendly bunch...very helpful and there is no one there that would ever say..."omg gregsta what a dork" if you ask a question...okay...i might...no..just kidding.
Remember...there was a first time for all of us. I am a dork and no one ever made me feel that way in chat. we want you there...if anyone ever makes you feel uncomfortable..Curi will kick butt. ~smiles~

Gregsta (et.al.)
The point you made about keeping up went unanswered. The key is to realize there are probably several conversations going on at the same time. Don't try to keep up with all of them, (at least not at first.) It's a nigh-on impossible task.
Just keep track of two or three people who are talking to each other, get the gist of the conversation, and join in. Ignore the rest. And keep an eye out for people addressing you personally (ala tip#4) and respond to them likewise... maybe starting your own multi-threaded conversation. LOL
See you there later.

I most probably will not answer this as eloquently as cariad...but thought i'd help her out. If i have not answered your question to your satisfaction...then i am sure she will.
Warbaby...according to the rules, once you are in the room...if you wish to speak to someone privately... you are to ask first...i.e. "May I talk to you in private" or "may i speak to you alone a moment" or something just as inane.
Some people just private without asking first...you will see it and the person you address will see it in the room...no one else will. The person you have asked may or may not respond...if they don't...well..guess a smart guy like you knows what that means...~smiles~

gregsta, seriously, most of us really do try to be polite and considerate of other's feelings....occasionally you will run across the exception. ~smiles~
We in chat and in the forums pride ourselves on being warm, friendly and caring toward others.

Um, some people feel that even the initial request must be made in public. I don't, but some take the rule literally, including the first inquiry. So you might get rebuffed for "privating" without asking first. Don't worry about it though... just so you know....
