Written on a day out to the seaside. A joyous occasion?

BLEAK OUTLOOK

They sat on the Esplanade their outlook Bleak
House.
Each in isolation thinking of deceased
Spouse.
We walked to the Pavilion where captured Eagle heralded Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo.
We fed the Sparrows who chattered news of those
Two.
And did they suffer a similar
Defeat?
Stubborn pride giving ground to greeting by that seaside
Seat?
The day was bright, light-flecked waves climbed up the
Beach.
She sat longing in her battery-powered
Chair.
He sat belonging to a long forgotten
Year.
We had to go back. Did they greet, did they
Talk?
But they had left like empty
Glasses.
She powering quietly away no longer able to
Walk.
He had moved to a coffee bar where he sat in the
Shade.
They have both gone from that place. Still alone, still
Afraid.
