Devils of the mind

She hesitates reaching out,
She knows the time has come,
To douse the feeble and flickering flame,
What unspeakable horrors await,
Just beyond the candle's unassuming wake,

Lurking there in the dark,
Crouching on misshapen limbs,
Always shifting in the shadows,
Just beyond the periferal of her sight,
Snagging her at every turn of her mind,

A host of Angels assigned,
Resting at her head and feet,
Having just that day been blessed,
And prayed for by the good Sisters and Priests,
So what then should she fear,

With a fearful and shuddering breath,
She crosses herself whispering a silent prayer,
Snuffs out the remaining light,
And scurries to her bed in the guttering silence,
As darkness descends upon the room,

With visions of the Devil's imps,
Cavorting through her head,
A dance of such onholy vileness,
It fills her heart with dread,
She squeezes tight her fear filled eyes,
Lest a single tear she shed,

What was that soft whisper of sound,
Could it just be in her head,
A fear induced illusion to further fill her,
With quaking cold hard dread,
Or were they moving slowly closer,
To the soft warm haven of her bed,

No, she knew she heard a movement,
As stealthy as they may be,
Her heart clamoring in her chest,
Relight the candle, or be still praying for the best,
Shaking with cold dread she waits silently in her bed,

Furtively through heavy lids,
She dares to take a peek,
Was that a furtive movement there,
Does she dare risk to speak,
Fear oppressive, weighing, preying,
Heavy on her superstitious mind,

What unholy Devil's succubus,
Waits beyond her reach,
Only there to rend her flesh,
With huge and yellow teeth,
Gobbling up her mortal soul,
It's ravaging thirst to slake,

Visions of the frightful demons,
Depicted in the Holy church,
Burst through her fear wrought mind,
Catching her breath in her chest,
Forcing her to whimper in distress,

She strains her ears, a noise, a noise,
Holding her breath she listens again,
'Til there's a burning in her chest,
But as she takes a breath again,
She is sure the sound repeats,

Trembling in the bedclothes, now chilled by her sweat,
She dares and fears again the thought to turn them back,
Too afraid to light the candle,
She trembles there in the dark alone,
What will grab ahold of her if she reaches out her hand,

Fear silencing her voice, cold and dead within her chest,
There is no way left to call for help,
For even if she found the strength,
Who then would she tell,

Daring to open just one eye,
The smallest concession of compromise,
Her eyes there slowly in the black of night,
Adjust to the lack of light,
What was that, a stealthy shadow,
Moving just beyond the edge of sight,

Curiosity and fear winning out at last,
She opens wide her fearful eyes,
Taking in a shuddering breath,
Her heart stops then from fright,
Lying cold and sprawling there,
Mind fed by zealous religious fervor,
Scared literally to death,
By nothing more than the Devils in her mind.
