3. Write a short story about the background of one of the characters mentioned in the chapter.
(I chose to write the story of how Steve came to be a part of the organization that identifies and kidnaps submissive women.)

Please... please let Sarah be okay.
Steve smashed the warehouse window with his elbow and unlatched the frame from the inside. He crawled into the quiet and darkened building, hoping that he would find some sign of his beloved Sarah.
Three weeks ago, his girlfriend of three years disappeared. The police labeled her a runaway, but Steve did not believe them, knowing that Sarah as too professional and honest to pack her bags and flee. No matter his pleas, the answer was always the same- he would receive no help from officials. He knew that if he was ever to find the truth behind Sarah's vanishing act, he would have to investigate it himself.
While the police insisted that there were no witnesses, Steve quickly found that to be an outright lie. On the night of Sarah's disappearance, several of her neighbors noticed a black van parked in the street, an unusual sight for the suburban neighborhood in which Sarah and Steve lived. Further investigation revealed a license plate number, but still the police did nothing, admonishing Steve for doing his own investigation and threatening him with obstruction of justice if he continued to get in the way of their own non-investigation.
And now, here he was, smashing his way into a warehouse, hoping to rescue the woman that he loved, unaware that what lay in the darkness would change his life forever.
Steve swashed his flashlight from side to side, scouring for clues that would explain the connection between the van's owner and the disappearance of Sarah. The registration information for the black van seemed to check out; the warehouse and van really did belong to a boring old paper company. The peaceful illusion of the place was shattered, however, when he saw a light coming from an opened cargo container. He turned off his flashlight and crept closer through the darkness. As he neared the container, he heard the distant echo of moans and voices. Finally, he reached the metal door of the container, to find that it was not a container at all, but a ruse. Built into the floor of the fake container was a flight of stairs, leading over twenty feet below the warehouse. Steve quietly walked down the metal stairs when a gruff male voice startled him.
"You stupid little whore. You're just making things harder on yourself, you know that, don't you?" The distinct crack of a whip penetrated his ears, followed by laughter. Steve could tell there were many men and at least one women downstairs. He proceeded with caution.
The stairs emptied into a long hallway lined with rusted metal doors. All were shut, bolted, and locked, save one from which the muffled screams continued. Steve peeked through the doorway and immediately recognized the gagged and blindfolded victim hanging from the ceiling.
It was Sarah.
"Sarah!" Steve burst into the room without weapon or plan. Within moments the spectators of Sarah's abuse had him pinned to the floor. "Let her go you freaks!"
The Italian man whom was whipping Sarah dangled his whip to the side. "Oh? Who the hell do you think you are?" Besides him, Sarah was thrashing about and screaming into her ballgag at the recognition of her lover's voice. The man looked at Sarah, intrigued, then turned back towards the invader pinned to the ground. "You must be Steve! She still screams out your name, you know."
Steve fought against the men pinning him to the floor, but he was far too weak to overcome their combined strength. "I said let her go, you fucking freaks!"
The Italian man laughed. "Freaks? Please, stop feigning moral outrage. We all know about yours and Sarah's sex kinks. In fact, her propensity for submission was why we picked her up, but she doesn't seem nearly as compliant as our profile had indicated." The man looked down at Steve and smiled. "Perhaps you would like to help us."
"Help you? What the hell does that mean?"
"It means exactly as it sounds. We know you enjoy dominating women, and while we normally don't recruit men without hardened criminal records, you might be useful to the recruitment and training of submissive women. And if you aren't... well, let's not think about the unpleasant details." He extended the whip towards Steve, and the guards loosened their grip.
Steve froze. Did they mean what he thought they meant? To assist in the forced abuse of his girlfriend...
Steve started to become aroused. As much as he cared for Sarah, the thought of her screaming against her unwilling torture thrilled Steve. He took the whip out of the Italian's hand and slowly crept towards his girlfriend.
The man urged Steve, "Go ahead, do it. Let's see if you have it in you." Steve paused, then swung the whip, landing a slight hit against Sarah's backside. "Oh come on, is that it? Do it harder, or not at all.
This time, Steve swung harder, cracking the whip loudly. Sarah squealed through her gag, and Steve smirked in slight satisfaction, feeling no remorse for the pain he inflicted. "Better, but not nearly enough," the Italian pushed Steve further.
Finally, Steve gave his swing all that he had, snapping the whip perfectly to maximum the lash. Sarah screamed and burst into tears that streamed beneath her blindfold, and Steve grinned in deep fulfillment. All his life he had been finding and dating women that would let him subjugate them, but none of that planned roleplay had come close to the real thing. Even his love for Sarah did nothing to dampen his love of true domination. Faster and faster Steve whipped Sarah, unaware that the men around him were staring, shocked at his sadistic brutality.
Long after Sarah's back was riddled with lashes, the Italian moved towards Steve. He gently placed his hand on Steve's arm and smiled. "That's enough... for now. I think you'd make a wonderful fit in our association."
Steve's future flashed before his eyes, and it was one without Sarah, the woman whom he had once regarded as the love of his life. Instead of one women were many, each a potential target for Steve's sadistic whims.
It was the life he was always wishing for.
