Rings of Fire
Tammy was gripping the steering wheel tightly while trying to keep a relaxed face, the white knuckles the only sign of her inner turmoil. A drop of sweat ran down the side of her face, luckily the side that wouldn't be seen from the passenger seat, but she could always blame that on the august sun and the broken ventilation in the old sedan. She should be happy, even giddy about having finished college and gotten a well paying job in a top hundred biotech company. She tried to impress that thought on the shaky image of herself that looked back doubtfully from the rear mirror, which tumbled loosely in its socket and finally turned to the other side.
The reason for her distress was sitting next to her, and just thinking about Lizza with her huge brown eyes, her always perfectly styled black curly hair and her slender body in the top-notch wear had Tammy's stomach clenching. Tammy had volunteered to drive her to her new flat, in a small town close to Palo Alto, knowing this was the last chance.
Jonny Cash blared from the car hifi. Love is a burning thing, and it makes a fiery ring.
Mustering her courage, she stuttered, “I – I can't believe its over” and dared a quick glance at her former flatmate.
“Yeah,” the relaxed voice of Lizza answered her, “I still think it was yesterday when we were running over the campus without plan, trying to find the biology lab. They never found out who stuck the 'facility maintenance' sign over the room number, did they?”
“Oh, huh,” this conversation was going in the wrong direction, and Tammy had no clue how to bring it back on topic, “they didn't. But I – Lizza,” her heart was beating like mad now, and a feeling of desperation washed over her that seemed to drown out every conscious thought. Without really registering what she was doing, Tammy pushed on the brakes and brought the sedan to screeching halt, stalling the engine in the process.
The car gave a last shake, and she clenched her eyes shut, knowing that she would never be able live down the humiliation that was to ensue from what she was about to do, but also aware that she would never forgive herself if she didn't try at at least.

She pushed the off-button on the hifi. “I love you, Lizza.”
The silence was deafening, the only sound the rush of blood in her ears, and it seemed like ages until she heard Lizza's hushed response.
“Tammy, I like you too. You're my best friend,”
“No! Not just like that!” Tammy interrupted, but when she opened her eyes again, her reflection looked back again from the dangling mirror, showing her boyish self with the watery grey eyes and not-brown-not-blonde, pageboy style hair, her plain face above the cheap t-shirt that read 'danger zone', bought in a futile attempt to make herself stick out more. How could she dare to approach a woman like Lizza, shining with perfection? Salty tears trickled down her face and over her trembling lips.
She had done it. Instead of continuing her silent admiration that had worked so well for the last four years that they had shared a flat, instead of the secret nightly dreams of what might have been, she would leave her friend with the never-ending memory of rejection. She hung her head with a sob, feeling like a fool.
“Tammy, look at me.” Lizza's voice startled her out of her string of thoughts, but she didn't dare to look up. Soft fingers touched her chin, and she couldn't resist the slight pressure that guided her head around. Lizza was looking at her with wide eyes and an apologetic look. “I had no idea, Tammy, really. Why didn't you tell me earlier?”
“How,” Tammy hiccuped, “how could I?” she asked, averting her gaze again. “You're so beautiful, so perfect, and I'm nothing. And I,” she angrily wiped a fresh gush of tears from her face, “I feared to loose you if you knew.”
“Look at me, Tammy.” Lizza's voice held a demanding undertone that made the hairs on Tammy's neck stand, and without thinking she did so.
“It's not far to my new flat, only a few minutes. Once there, we will talk. I promise. OK?”
Tammy nodded. A weird, detached feeling had gotten hold of her, and like in trance she started up the engine and put in the gear. It really didn't take long to get to Lizza's new address. Once there she followed her friend into the modern three story house and up the stairs to her flat. A soft hand guided her to one of the chairs in the already furnished kitchen, and a glass of water was put before her.
“Tammy,” sitting down on the opposite side, Lizza grasped for her left hand that was idly tracing patterns on the water glass, “this comes a bit as a shock for me. I really like you very, very much, but”
There was the but. Tammy tried to pull away her hand and run away, but her friend wouldn't release her grip. Instead, her other hand guided her chin upwards until their eyes met.

This was completely unexpected, and Tammy's thoughts reeled, afraid of interpreting something into that statement that wasn't there. “It doesn't matter!” She blurted out though, and looking into the sincere eyes of her friend she began to realize what that meant. However, Lizza hadn't rejected her at once, and a faint trickle of hope sent its warmth through her body.
“You,” she struggled with the words with a tearful chuckle, “you're into that BDSM thing?”
Lizza nodded. “Yes I am. And not just a bit. It's my dark side, and loving me is going to hurt. Hurt a lot.”
Tammy nodded her understanding. “It doesn't matter. As long as I don't loose you. You're my goddess.” She looked up into the unmoving face of her friend and buried her face in her hands. “Oh god, I sound pathetic.”
A pair of arms suddenly engulfed her from behind, and Lizza's soft voice whispered, “you're not. You are sweet.” And as hot lips lightly touched her neck, her body felt like on fire within an instant.
