Pushing the tent flap open, she hesitated noticing the two uniforms inside. About to back out, General gestured for her to come in. Internally she winced. Seeing the royal uniforms brought back a lot of memories, not all of them were good. The two soldiers turned to look at her and there was little choice but to step in side.
“Lady Ashlyd Devika?”
“Officer Ashlyd….” She corrected softly, finally walking further into the tent. No use in standing in the doorway like a scared child.
“Prince Numair has requested your presence at his castle…”
“Why?” Ashyld enjoyed the stupid look on the guards face. They probably were not use to the Prince’s orders being questioned.
“Officer Ashlyd!”General seemed less than pleased by her tormenting the guards. A faint smile came to her lips but she worked hard to make it disappear. “You are excused to pack your bags. Your unit will be under Jadryen’s command until your return. ”
Apparently that was the end of the conversation. Staring at the General another minute, she finally turned and walked out of the tent. She did not want to go back there. It had been four years since she left and rejoined the army. Trying to avoid anything that reminded her of him. They say time could heal all wounds, Ashlyd did not believe that. And if rumors were true, Prince Numair did not either.

The three day ride gave her more than enough time to think on things she never wanted to think about again. Ashlyd left the castle five years ago she had told herself she was never going back there. Yet here she was, summoned to the place that held so many good memories and some of the worse memories. The guards were silent most of the trip, letting her be in her own thoughts. Ashlyd was as nervous now as she was the first time her lover took her there to introduce her to his brothers, the princes.
Nevin, the eldest of the four brothers was already married a year by the time she arrived for that first visit. He was a good man, fair and just. A true born ruler. His wife, Alyssa, was a beautiful woman. Numair, the second eldest met his future wife not long after their first meeting. It was love at first sight and plans were quickly made to be wed. His bride-to-be, Jael, a sweet shy princess from a neighboring land. Morven, third eldest and the warrior of the family. It was on the battle field that she first met him and later fell in love. Mellic was the youngest brother. Like the eldest, he was a diplomat but more than that he was a scholar. Well educated on law and history.
Four brothers, four loves of their lives, and the only two survived were Numair and her. The first deaths Mellic was murdered, along with his new fiancé, in a ambush on the way to the castle. Alyssa and Jael were both assassinated less than three days later at the summer castle, Numair had been injured but survived. Nevin and his entourage were attacked on their way to the summer castle to check on his brother. He survived the immediate attack but later died of his wounds. Morven insisted on leading a unit against the enemy. The information all pointed to this was the right time. Too bad the information was bad. He was less than twenty feet from her when she watched fall. All of her efforts to get to him in time were in vain.
The escorts that had been with them, helped carry his body from the field and drag her back to the castle. She wanted to stay and seek revenge for his death but she was no match against the guards. They had been given orders if anything was to happen to him, she was to be taken to safety. With their prince dead, they refused to fail him his last wish. So she had returned to the castle with her lovers body.
Sheering her hair short in grief, the pain of the loss was worse than any wound she had ever received. There had been a lot of death in her life. Ashlyd had joined the army four years before meeting Morven. A lot of companions and friends, a few lovers, had fallen in that time. But none of those deaths came close to the impact that Morven’s death had. Within a fortnight of the funeral, she had gone in front of Numair and requested permission to rejoin a unit of the army. He had offered her a place at court, give her a title and land. It said it was the least he could do for his brother’s lover. Ashlyd had turned it down. She was not a Lady of the court, she could not survive in these walls. Besides as time went on, someone was bound to think it was time for “Prince Morven’s sleeper” to go back to her place and her response to that was not going to be good.

It was almost a year before she could go to bed without crying herself to sleep. A year before the grief eased enough that she could start to become herself again. In that time, the General did his best not to baby her but also find a balance to occupy her and force her to move on with her life. As time went on she found herself letting the grief go, exercise and constant movement helped. Work herself in exhaustion so she could not cry at night. And as bad as the loss of Morven had been on her, she could understand if some of the rumors about Prince Numair were true.
Ashlyd did not know how he had moved on with so much close death. The man had not only lost three brother but their mates as well. With his fiancé dead and no child. He was the last heir of the family. And she had left him too. Unable to stay in the castle and look at him. He looked so much like her dead love it would have been unbearable.
As she walked the stone walls she considered maybe he had not moved on. There were stories of violent behavior and strange outburst. Of course that might not be new. Morven had more than his share of violent outburst. He had also told her that no matter how gentle and kind his other brothers were, they had the same blood running through their veins. Taking a deep breath she said a silent prayer that she would quickly be returning to her unit.
“Lady Ashlyd Devika is here to see you Sire….”
“Officer Ashlyd Devika…” Calmly she corrected. Wondering how many times she would make that correction before she got tired and just let it slide.
