What constitutes a copywrited picture? does the statement "I've collected these pictures" make them any less someone elses? I had interpreted the rule to mean "I took the pictures myself" or maybe "I know the dude/dudette who took the pictures."

Is there an age at which point a picture's copywrite lapses? I've seen some vintage b&w shots that I'm pretty sure either appeared in old mags or were sold as part of sets in days gone by.
