I think that my single all-time favorite S/M scene from a film that was not a BDSM film per se was in "Poor Cecily" (I hope I have that name right) -- a (1970's or early 80's?) run-of-the-mill costume drama porn film except for one short scene set in a dungeon. A couple of stunning actresses, as I recall, and really first-rate sound editing -- scary music, loud whips, blood-curdling screams. Very effective.

In those years I lived not too far from a theatre which showed Japanese films -- often double or triple features with one main-stream family-type film along with a second (or third) feature that was often soft core erotica. Lots of samurai-era films, many with great BDSM sequences. Also many schoolgirl-gang films with ditto. Several featured a stunning actress named Miki Sugimoto, whose beauty and numerous dangerous predicaments I still remember a quarter of a century later . I don't know if or where you could lay your hands on them, but the frequent s/m scenes in the Japanese films of the seventies were often well-acted, well-motivated and very realistic -- unlike most US BDSM genre films.

Another film that I have seen in US video stores with a good S/M scene is a (1970's) soft-core film set in the American west. A scantily-clad Native-American girl is on the cover of the video, as I recall, which I believe is entitled "Savage Justice". Lots of beautiful ladies, and one fairly extended flogging scene that I thought was extremely well done. (The original film, if memory serves, was called "The Ramrodders")

You might also want to check out the Whipping Scenes in Movies website ( I think it's wsimd.com, but am not sure) -- scores of general release films are listed (many of them European) with capsule descriptions of the BDSM scenes
