A Modest Proposal

In light of the utter chaos that now seems to reign supreme on the site; a huge and ever growing back log of stories, many of which are probably going to be taken down almost as soon as they are posted, computer glitches that lurk around every corner, and the overriding issue of underage stories now on the site, to name but a few, I would like to suggest to our new and currently struggling Administrator that he consider taking the site down for at least a week until he has a better command over this fractious beast. What is going on right now reminds me of someone trying to repair a race car that is out on the track running at around 200 mph and going into the third turn at Indy.

Lex, that's a very witty analogy.

I had no idea the sight was in utter chaos.

As opposed to a race car, we are dealing with various components of code within an overarching environment.
It may not be necessary to take everything down at one time to perform fixes.

For example, the forum can stay up and running, while the stories section is repaired and vice versa.

However, if Tiger decides it all needs to come down for a short period of time, then I'll support that decision.

Guess you don't follow the promises that Tiger has been making and unable to keep in light of the fact that the SITE is a bit more complex than he thought it was. First he promised to start posting on a regular basis and delivered a mouse, for one day only. Do you have any idea how many postings are hung up in this mess? Try close to a hundred based on data from the past six months! At the current rate of progress, the back log should be up to two hundred by mid December. Meanwhile no one is capable of reviewing the new postings, 5 in all, due to another glitch in the programming. This one has been in existence for the better part of a week for your information. Then we have the minor issue of cleaning up the little mess involving what is now being called the "underage" stories, which for your information are only underage based on the latest witch hunt. Jinn's guidelines clearly stated that 13 was the lower limit of a character's age. Most of the authors honored that guideline. Now we and the site readers in many cases are caught in a giant mess that I'm very interested in seeing how it finally is resolved. Jinn's approach is monumentally flawed based on my knowledge and what I've read posted on the Library itself. I'd be willing to put up some serious money that by the time the dust has settled, upwards of one fourth of the Library will have disappeared, gone into the black hole of those who now have the power over the rest of us. From your fat, dumb and happy perspective that's not a problem, it's not your ox that is being gored. People like you really make me angry; it's ME ME ME, and the hell with you jack, I've got mine. However, the perception that many of our readers have is that the library is on the verge of shutting down. That perception was initiated by outside forces, the anti-obscenity wave.

Everytime the site's down, readers cringe, 'Another one bites the dust.' Correspondence between writers and their fans indicate as much. (Oh. You don't have any corresponders?:eek: Sorry.)

So, logic dictates that if the site is shut down for a few days, we will have lost quite a few readers, right? Lex, you wanna lose readers?

I didn't think the transfer would cause so much problems. I like to take this opportunity to thank the people involved and wait patiently for my suggestion in another post.

I speculate they are reluctant to take the site down since the revenue stream lost from any downtime would be anything but modest.

Feeling better? If not, then please rant some more. Rant again, then do something constructive with that anger. Because no matter what "I, I, I," think, at the end of the day, I do not run or own this site. Nor is my opinion any more valuable than yours. They are, after all, only opinions.

Just because we have freedom of speach, doesn't mean we can run into a theater and yell fire.

How can you help keep this website and its library going?
Are you helping fund it?
Writing stories that pass the Miller test?
Supporting legal organizations that back your rights?

Ruby--great reply and links. I must say I was quite offended by lex's attitude toward the new administration and the work it takes to take over a site like this. Your well thought out response and provided information was great to read. You always come up with the most wonderful responses to the the less than rashional threads. Your wisdom is refreshing.

Jaz--I agree! This site so much benefits from the calm logic that Ruby provides this site. Not only is it refreshing but essential for any site to survive. When you have someone of Ruby's (and others as well) calm and graceful postings, they help to balance a site like this.

Nakita--you are so right. Not only do the readers depend on this sited but also others who use this forum specificly to learn. I for one am one of those people. Losing my "reference" guide, if you will, no matter how temporary would be hard to get past.

You still don't get it do you? I've already gone on record as stating that if the new or the old Administrator wants to take my stories down, he or she is welcome to do it. My complaint, and I will make it again, is that this cannot be done easily since the story codes don't leave a trail of breadcrumbs to make eliminating all the offending stories an easy process. There are nearly 4000 stories archieved on this SITE alone! So if the big bad wolf disguised as someone interested in the welfare of the nation's children, who in general are a rather curious and randy lot in case you didn't know, approaches this rather vulnerable SITE and finds an offending story, thanks to some dedicated government stooge or mole who has dug one up, guess what, school is out!

I'm first and foremost a writer, I scribble for my own enjoyment. I'm not in any way into the "life" or whatever you people call your personal thing. Child pornography, whatever that is, is a perfect foil for descendents of the Pilgrims, our born-again, evangelical, right wing warriors who think they have the truth and all shall be either converted or sent to prison. I've heard this nonsense from people like you for years about the written word and it still doesn't make any sense to me. Obscenity or child pornography or any other taboo that one can name all comes down to one simple test. It depends on what kind of a jury makes the decision and what type of background they have. If I'm Gonzalez, the one who validated the US right to torture prisoners, I'll make damn sure to get every case I prosecute tried in the Deep South, and avoid like the plague any large city such as New York, Boston, and LA for obvious reasons.

I think if people would wake up and realize what is happening to this country, the witch hunts would end rather quickly. However their oxen have yet to be gored and when they are, it may be too late for everyone. Here's a little fact for you to chew on. During 8 years of the Clinton administration the governement prosecuted perhaps five obsenity cases, having better things to do with their limited resources. During the first 4 years of the current administration, they were even more disinterested based on government efforts in this area. Now that the Texas crowd have their tit in a wringer, so to speak, it's time to mount a crusade against "immorality" to keep their "base", and you can define that word in more than one way, from deserting the leader, a born-again, former drug user, who has seen the light. What utter crap!

I am now stepping down from my soap box and taking leave of the field of literary combat since I've got much better things to do with my time than arguing with folks who have a great deal of trouble understanding the English language. Here's something for all of you active participants to mull over when you're not doing whatever you're not supposed to be doing. The ratio of lurkers to active participants is better than fifty to one based on reviewers, postings in the forums and other information. Did you ever stop to wonder what they think and enjoy? During the past six months I ran a little experiment to see what brings them out of the woodwork. Believe you me, it ain't pretty, but that's the real audience for this SITE. When they go away and they will, you people can have a grand time talking to each other by phone, if you dare. Remember the Patriot's Act the next time you make that call.

I know what it is like to run a php sql site, transfering a site from one server to another is even more of a nightmare, version differences in php, certain item in one ini file and not in the other, version of sql used, weither yopu ahve root access on the server, etc can create a major problem with the interactivity of the database and the programming used to run the site, and no it is not simple html we are tallking about.

and now a days you can and do do repairs on race cars while they are racing (depending on what is needed)

I think what needs to happen is Tiger needs to make sure to the best of his ability that all versions of the main programs are the same, if not he may have to build the site from scratch just to reestablish the relational databases and with the number of stories that would take a LOooOOOOOooooOOOOoong time.

A lot of people that read here are not aware of all of the problems even keeping a complex site like this running not to mention that the FED's are always looking over you sholder for any reason to shut you down.

On second read-through I can see how upset Lex is, so I'm inclined to forgive a little ranting but name-calling doesn't get your point of view any respect. Clever that those who don't agree don't understand English. I used to work for a guy like that.

Well Ruby, I have to say, I agree with Lex -- for the most part -- when it comes to the written word and this site. Your comments about the various tests used by the supreme court were known to me.

But the underage thing is pure hypocracy. You cannot convince me that stories that don't include those oh so young children (you know, the 17 year olds which also count as kids?) but do include things like snuff, torture, scat will pass those tests. Those stories are pure porn and not protected. And you'll be convicted just as fast for posting them.

See, the trouble is, no matter what you personally think (the general 'you', not you personally), the 'community standards' have changed because the community has changed. The 'community' is now world wide, not just in the US. But while we export democracy and religious tolerance abroad it is starting to fade in the US.

And, not for nothing, but Lex is a contributer for the site. So *was* I. But I had my stuff pulled from ALL the sites that I use to contribute to. Sure, there was underage stuff in them. But not in all of them, but I pulled every one, because I didn't feel any of them would pass those tests. And I'm willing to bet that very, very few of the stories on this site would, young charactors or no, would pass them either.

My bottom line was this: I write for my enjoyment, and for my readers (and oh yes, I had many of them, so don't even go there) enjoyment. The relationship between the site and me was benificial to both of us. I got to write, readers to to read, the site got readers. But if the site, and the readers, are not going to stand up for me (and I know they wouldn't -- hell just read the "It's okay to censor your kink as long as you leave mine alone" posts), if they're going to censor *some* posts, but not *all* posts, then why should I post here?

The answer is, I won't. And please spare me the 'good riddence' line. I know that my writing was pretty good because people have paid me, on occasion, to write. Not enough to live on, but it's nice to know that some folks liked it enough to want me to write for them.

If I see that the site and the readership is standing by the writers, then I might start posting again. Remember, no writers, no readers. But for now, it's off to usenet.

I agree with you in theory. In a US based court of law, that particular arguement hasn't worked...yet. What is community? What is obscene?

As individuals, we might as well all use the famous line from Jusice Potter Stewart:

In 1964, Justice Potter Stewart tried to explain "hard-core" pornography, or what is obscene, by saying, "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced . . . [b]ut I know it when I see it . . . "[1]

What action would you have the readers and new owner of this site, which is located in the US take to stand up for you? Would that action be different if the site was located in another country?

Have you contacted Tiger and asked him what he is willing to post again? As the new owner, it is his decision.

I understood the sarcasm, and agree with it. I would guess my point is that we live in a different world now, with regard to how wide the community is. As a result, it is possible that some restructuring is required.

All very difficult questions. I *chose* to remove my postings. As far as a battlefield, and your not so subtle inference that I'm a coward, there is no battle field. There is no defense -- not in this 'battle'. It is lost before it is begun because no one has the time or the money to have their lives ruined by being brought up on charges.

Why do I think no one would stand up for an author? I've read a number of posts that indicate that is the case. And quite frankly, I don't hear you coming up with any suggestions to face these issues. I chose my path -- I removed my content. But, it was MY choice. No one forced me. When someone forces you, censors you, that's a big difference.

You know, I have to say that you are very subtle with your insults. Perhaps it might sound different if you said, in person, what you are writing, but as I read more of your comments, I am beginning to doubt it.

I am not jealous of people who write for a living: I'm a bit envious. Oh, and I have sold my writing, both to private parties, and, under a different pen name, to some of the very same sites that YOU put your books on.

My fans, should they want to find my writing, know it can be found on usenet.

It was a bit of a rant, because I've read a number of "my kink is ok but yours should be censored" posts.

My comment about not posting here anymore was perfectly clear. Writers that post stories that are not 'politically correct' (by the current definition) are not welcome here. One of the things that made this site great was that it was on the edge and most decidedly NOT mainstream. If the site loses that, then really, how different is it from any other site that's 'Safe/Sane/Consensual/Politically correct'?

Again, it isn't my site, so it isn't my decision. I'm sure that the site will run quite well without my input or my writing. If enough authors decide that the site is too restrictive, too vanilla, then what will happen? There are lots of sites out there that go along just fine, but it would be a shame to see this one become so ... common.

Oh please. Doom and gloom. What a crock of shit. What are your suggestions? And, come to think of it, what have you written and contributed to the site? I could be wrong, but when I checked under your name you had one story, which, as I recall appeared to be more or less an advertisement for books you want to sell.

That's all well and good, I suppose, but when I posted stories, people got them for free. And I didn't use a free site to advertise books that were for sale. So when you start going off on me about my choices e.g. removing my FREE material from a FREE website, how about you add some of that 'Obscenity Free' stuff you write to this site?

You might wonder why it appears I'm going off on you. Well, I'll tell you: It's because your response to my post was very subtly condescending and insulting. And your comments about my 'perceived' jealously make sense when coupled with the fact that you're a paid author while you think I'm not.

IMO: Whether or not you or I receive any money for any of our writing is a red herring to what's happening to our freedom in the US to write and publically post stories that may or may not pass the Miller test. Whether or not you and I even post stories on this site doesn't make our opinions any more valuable than anyone else's. Yet let's make no mistake, opinions do count. They sway and make political decisions that affect our daily lives.

Well. I just had to say this somewhere and this thread seems as good a place as any.
Two things...First...has anyone else noticed a very large increase in the amount of spam they are recieving lately? At first I couldn't figure out why I was getting tons of viagra and porn spam when I never used to get any. Then yesterday the bdsm site here sent me a nice "happy birthday" message and it slid into my bulk folder along with all the tons of spam I've suddenly started to get. Conclusion...the "new" version of this site is selling, or giving, our addresses to spammers and e-mail box stuffers. Am I wrong about this? Anyone else have an opinion?
Second. In the private message area there doesn't seem to be an "out" box or a "sent" box anymore. Am I missing something or have those functions been disabled? .

First of all Happy Late Birthday! And secondly...yep! I have recently noticed a couple of viagra spam messages in my inbox! And I certainly don't need Viagra! LOL Anyway...I am hoping that our addresses are not being used this way. And I haven't noticed the outbox or sent function being gone...but I will check that out asap!

No-one besides Learningtopleeze has responded to my questions about this site and spam. I was relieved when it died off for a bit after my initial post but now it has re doubled. Now I'm getting ten to fifteen silly ass spam messages a day when I used to get none!.
I have not joined any new sites and I don't give out my e-mail addy indiscriminatly. Am I really the only one getting tons of new spam all of a sudden? If I am wrongly accusing the new owner(s) of this site then I am sorry but it is just very suspicious that this barrage of spam started at almost exactly the same time I got a "happy birthday" message from this site.

I'm not seeing any more spam than usual to the address I use for this site. (I run a number of websites and have many e-mail addresses.)

One trick is to use a different e-mail address for each site or group of sites to which you subscribe.

It's faster to track down which site is the culprit.

LOL, yeah! no kidding... and that one stupid banner makes the site definitely NSFW! You can't have anyone walking into your office and seeing that crap on the screen. Before that I was able to get away with a visit during the day--but not so easy now.

try using firefox as a browser and blocking popups. I don't see the skanks anymore since I switched.
And if that doesn't work try Opera...an even better and safer browser.
