“Knowing others is wisdom; Knowing the self is enlightenment; Mastering others requires force; Mastering the self requires strength”
~Lao Tzu
Reminds me of an article I once read by Asimov regarding Ben Franklin developing the lightning rod. Seems most religious leaders around the world condemned the lightning rod as a tool of the devil to try to avert God's wrath. But it soon became apparent that the local churches, without lightning rods, were being struck by lightning while the local brothels, with lightning rods, were not. Didn't take long for the churches to get the message.
And this, too: I still say a church steeple with a lightning rod on top shows a lack of confidence. – Doug McLeod
The really sad part is that it cost them $250,000 to make that monstrosity. Will probably cost more to try to replace it. Can't they find a more humane, rational way to waste their money?
