We are talking (mainly) about chilli peppers here.
Someone said that you can't control the hotness, but actually I don't believe that is quite correct.
Apparently you can add bicarbonate of soda to spicy food and it reduces the hotness. This is a perfectly harmless mineral salt and you can buy it anywhere.
I came across this as a solution if you accidentally put too much chilli pepper into the food you are cooking.
As for reducing the burn if it gets too severe, perhaps bathing with bicarbonate of soda dissolved in water might be soothing.
If somebody tries it they could let us know!
Bicarbonate of soda is commonly used as an antacid.
