I know that the INS can be a pretty grumpy bunch of people.

My brother in law is from Spain. When they were married He was here on a work visa, and because they got married according to the traditions of the Catholic church the timing of the wedding was a few weeks shy of the visa running out.

The INS was freaky, acting like the marriage was some sort of scam, but thankfully the Church heirarchy was more than willing to speak on their behalf.

I find it unsettling though that your wife has had the full extent of the law placed on her when so many illegal immigrants are given opportunities to become "legal."

As bunnyrabbit suggested, I would definetely contact a Senator or Congressman. Let them know you are a registered voter, and are being forced to leave the USA to be a family, that will get attention.
