I hope this post doesn't hijack the purpose of this thread, but, I felt the need to respond.
I saw your assignment, Razor. Even though English is my first language, I had to re-read it several times. ~snicker~
You are the writer and interpretation of the assignment is yours to craft keeping in mind the parameters he outlined. The examples were for illustration, right? ~Correct me if I'm wrong, Mad, my coffee hasn't kicked in.~
The exercise, at least as I see it, is meant to push you outside the box and challenge your imagination. It's a creative writing task.
What do I mean by thinking outside the box? For me, the boxes are structure and pov. Listening to music takes me out of the box. I keep changing the music selections until I find one appropriate to the topic I'm writing about, but it doesn't have to relate to the topic at all.
*couldn't find a song to put me in the mood for my first assignment tho...heh heh.*
Thoughts of structure and pov stifle me and have to remain out of the picture until it's time for editing. When it is time to edit, music tends to be a distraction and therefore, I refrain from listening.
Anyway, that's how I approach the battle. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.
Hope this helps.
