I’m glad to see you throw yourself into this project Euryleia,
your efforts are inspiring. The internet is a wonderful research tool but should be approached with some caution. The sad truth is anyone can post anything, I mean even I’ve got things posted on line.
So let’s do some fact checking.
PETA has a well-known penchant for using prurient material to entice donors, so the excerpt you found probably did come from them. They also are single minded in the pursuit of their cause and would have little regard for literary accuracy. We also know that Hope was the target of both ALF (Animal Liberation Front) and AARF (Army of the Animal Resistance Force) activists. These two groups, having been frustrated in their attempts to run Hope to ground, would have no qualms about using her written word for their own profit. As you mentioned what appears in the fund raising material has probably been manipulate by PETA propagandist. Knowing all that lets review the purported fragment of Hope’s story.
The use of was for were is exactly the type grammar error which might have earned Hope a few swats.Originally Posted by Hope
It is doubtful ‘akimbo’ was part of Hopes vocabulary at the time, this was probably something added by PETA or AARF publicists.Originally Posted by Hope
Now that’s a puzzler.Originally Posted by Hope
Hope had few problems keeping genders straight so the error must have come from the transcription. But for what reason? You see both PETA and AARF propagandist are very single minded and rarely make an unintentional mistake. While we may never know the whole story I suspect the change in avian gender was a coded message to field agents. I do hope Hope is still safely hidden on Dan’s ranch down in Dry Springs Station, New South Wales (please don't tell anyone).
In summary this is a tantalizing bit of history, probably corrupted by fanatics , but perhaps the best indication of where Hope’s story was leading.
Thank you for the effort.
