I am still new here and not sure if this is where this should go. I was prompted to write this post due to a conversation I had with a client yesterday. He was telling me how he pierces his girlfriend just for the thrill of it. Describing his method to me left me horrified! I have been a professional piercer for 6 years and run a small shop in Connecticut. I offer play piercing to a few clients in a non sexual manner, and have been trying to talk my hubby into it for fun, hehe. I figured that other people are doing it for the thrill because, believe me, there is a huge rush from having needles placed under your skin! Some of us are masochists aren't we! The problem is, not everyone is safe. Needle play can be very dangerous if not performed correctly. There is the chance of infection not to mention blood borne diseases such as Hep B and HIV. A huge part of my job is education. I spend a majority of my time debunking stupid myths and educating people on how to care for their piercings. I figured I would post a few tips here, maybe it will help. THIS IS NOT A HOW TO GUIDE! These are just a few tips for those of you who are already performing this type of play.
EQUIPMENT
First off, make sure you have the right kind of needle. Single use injection needles in a size 20 gauge or less are recommended. Typically you would need a needle that is 1"-1.5" and pre-sterilized (always make sure the needles you are using are pre-sterilized!). The smaller the gauge, the less painful it will be. You can find these online at piercing supply websites or online medical supply shops. Your Grandma's sewing needles just won't do!
Make sure you have a sharps container to dispose of used needles properly. You can typically find these at your local drug store. Always use a sharps container and never throw needles in the trash! If your sharps container is full, there are a lot of places that can dispose of them properly. Call around to your local medical clinics and see if they offer this service. You should never save a needle either. They are meant to puncture the skin once then be discarded!
Have a bottle of 91% Isopropyl Alcohol on hand. You need to clean and prep the skin prior to piercing with a clean cotton ball or gauze. Never put alcohol on skin that has already been punctured.
Always use single use latex or nitrile gloves and change them often. You can usually find these at your local drug store or online. Before using latex make sure the person receiving the piercings is not allergic to latex. When in doubt, use nitrile. The vinyl food service gloves or the ones you get out of a box of hair color are not ok! You need proper protection.
A few other things to have on hand are a trash can with a plastic trash bag, clean cotton or gauze, a bottle of saline (you can use nasal saline you get in the cold isle), a bottle of water based lube and a place to wash your hands well with soap and water.
PIERCING
Here is a quick example of Needle Play:
Now that you have your equipment you are ready to begin. The first thing to do is to wash you hands very well with soap and hot water. Dry them with a clean paper towel. Make sure you have all your items within your reach. Place everything on a table or cart and think of this as your "clean zone". If you touch anything outside of your "clean zone" make sure you change your gloves. Have your "victim" in a comfortable position. First, put on a pair of gloves and prep the area to be pierced with alcohol. Placement is completely up to you. You will want to stay away from the face, neck and genitals if you are new to piercing. Chest, arms and back are ideal for someone who has never had it done before. These are lower pain areas. After you have prepped the area you need to change your gloves. Changing gloves is a good habit to prevent cross contamination. Now pick up a needle and remove it from it's sterile package. Uncap it and throw the cap away. Pinch up the skin between your index and thumb and with a smooth constant motion, slide the needle under the first few layers of skin. Watch your fingers, you do not want to poke yourself when the needle exits the skin! The entry and exit holes should be no more that half an inch apart. You do not want to go to deep. After you are finish piercing, you may play with the needles a bit to increase the endorphine flow. Twist them by the hubs or run your finger across where the needle is under the skin. To remove the needles, place a dab of water based lube onto the needle and pull out gently. Make sure they go right into the sharps container. Place the lube on a clean paper towel or plate, do not take it straight from the tube. There will be some minor bleeding, some more than others. Put a bit of pressure on the areas that are bleeding and wait a few minutes. Clean the areas with a little saline to remove the blood and sooth the area. Make sure everything in cleaned up well and put into the trash.
FINAL TIPS
Always use the right needles and never use them more than once
Practice good hand washing techniques and constant glove changes
Be aware of your surroundings, if you touch something outside of your "clean zone" change your gloves
Listen you your Piercee, let them decide how far to go
Look into a Blood Borne Pathogens class. You can find these online for about $25
Last but not least, only perform needle play if you are comfortable with it, and never play with strangers. This form of play requires a lot of trust!
