I felt a bit humbled by the attention I received for my part in the skirmish. I hadn't thought I did very much and was looking forward to a quick chat with Mom. On the way out, one of the Don's men took Chuck's keys to test the car...an action for which I was eternally grateful. I would have done it myself had no-one stepped forward, but I must admit, the thought of it had my knees turning to jello.
Chuck drove us home and we chatted along the way. I mentioned to him about the possibility of some training for the Don's men. (Not enough to give away all Chuck's secret defensive tactics, but enough to provide more protection for the Don).
We arrived back at the establishment and I noticed Mom had quickly taken care of adding security due to the higher threat level. The added attendants had sharp eyes and were quick and efficient in their movements.
Chuck opened the door and we went inside only to be bombarded by the staff with questions and hugs. I was quite embarrassed to be lifted and carried through as if I were a returning hero. I certainly didn't feel heroic. As soon as I was put back down Mom came up and put her arms around me in a hug. I whispered to her my part in the escapade and she let me know that I had done exactly the right thing. I felt better after that. We quietly chatted for a few minutes while I gave her a verbal report of everything. She let me know she wanted a full written report and I assured her I would take care of it first thing in the morning. Nodding in approval, she left the room.
Chuck and I stayed with the staff for about an hour, and had to repeat the story several times as newcomers joined our group. The excitement of the outing was beginning to wear on me and exhaustion was setting in. I was grateful when Chuck begged off for us and left to go start a bath. I followed him up within moments and joined him. The emotions that had been put on hold from the events of the evening came crashing down around the two of us and we shook in each other's arms.
Chuck and I lay in the tub together, wrapped in a cocoon of safety, warmth and love. I don't know which one of us moved first, but after some time we were in each other's embrace, passionately and slowly making love.
