I'm not sure if this is the right place or not.

I intend to submit a story for publication here on BDSM Library. I understand it would be easier to submit HTML format which is fine.

Can anyone tell me, apart from normal A4 conventions, do I need to alter magin widths? Or indeed, is there a recommended width of margins to set?

Lastly... line spacing? Should I keep as "1" or go for wider spaces between lines and paragraphs?

I appologise in advance for what may seem obvious to most of you.

Hello Stefani
I think they actually prefer text files. I used .rtf-format and it worked well enough. About spacing and stuff: It's probably easier to read (especially on the screen) if it's 1.5 lines.
Then: Since this is a mostly American board i don't know if they work with A4 or rather with letter format. Again: no big problem. I wouldn't make it too wide because it's easier to read when lines arent too long (always think of the ones who will read your story, you don't want them to drop out of reading your absolutely fantastic story only because the layout sucks ;) )

Last: the font: there are fonts that don't work too good, but with Verdana, Arial, Times or Courier you can't go wrong. Arial is usually the easiest to read on screen, alas it looks just terrible.

Looking forward to read your stories :)

Just a few bits from my experience (not just limited to BDSM Library): the less formatting you apply, the better. Don't even try to set margins or trifle with line and paragraph spacing, as what may look good on your screen is likely to be completely different on the readers'. Let paragraphs wrap themselves, don't insert any hard line breaks, and simply make double line breaks between paragraphs (or, in case of HTML, simply wrapping your paragraphs in 'p' tags is sufficient). This way, it won't matter if the reader has a 24" or more wide screen with 1900 pixels or if he's reading it on a 320 pixels PDA. Like lucy said, if you even set a font at all, keep to the few standard fonts that are common on all the different operating systems.

If you really feel that a story needs special formatting, you might give the reader the choice and submit a standard, 'dumb' version in TXT, HTML or RTF format together with a 'fancy' one in PDF format (you can use Openoffice to create that).

DarkPoet thank you so much.

Yes it seems simple is the best and suits us girls to a tee :)

Not that I am a writer.... more a rambler desperate to get my most kinky thoughts and fantasies down before they dissapear in a puff of smoke.

Thanks again
