Openings-and closure

One day we were three, on the tenth became four.
She went a full term and brought new life through the door.
Child looked at the Mother and I swear blue flame leapt.
I watched the two and the man in me wept.

She grew as they do and her face became sweet
We looked on and we smiled as she once found her feet.
She found her feet and found her soul and soon she found herself
She made us smile as she made her stand and did it all "'erdelf"

The winter came and down fell the snow.
She looked out at the sight and wanted to go.
We dressed her up snug and ushered her out.
"It's cold and it's wet and I don't like it!" She'd shout.

She grew as they do and her face became sweeter.
There were girls: There were boys who wanted to meet her.
She had many to choose and many would lose
But she extended her hands to the ones that would use her.

One day she ran and my task it was to retrieve her.
I tried: And by God I cried; but I found that I believed her.
I gave her a home and I gave her a roof and I gave her all my heart
I gave her my soul and so did my wife; but she failed in her part.

Now I learn and now I yearn for days long since in the past.
Those years have flown and she has grown apart from us so fast.
My heart has cracked: I face those facts that once I chose to ignore.
And once again I see that child-on the other side of the door.
