Sub or slave?

How do people here define the difference between a sub and a slave? And how do you define yourself/your partner(s)?

Is it the degree of submission? The commitment? The length of time? The service?

I'm not trying to find the "right" meanings, just interested in how other people use the terms.

For me, it boils down to a certain level and type of commitment. I am a slave to my Master. I have taken vows and have devoted myself to him.
