    Need some help....

I've recently noticed something on the front page that i hope doesn't become a trend.

Authors submitting stories that only contain a tease or the first chapter, claiming that the story is a work in progress, only to find that the rest of the story can be found at a paysite which is conveniently linked at the bottom of the text.

    http://www.bdsmlibrary.com/stories/w...p?storyid=2599

Now before i go on and on about it, i suppose i need the mods to clear up what our "mission statement" is here.. or the purpose of this board. It was my understanding that this board was here to share FREE bdsm works but i'll admit, this is only an assumption because i can't seem to find anything about our mission on the board.

If the works of authors like i mentioned above is acceptable to the moderators here.. then great i'll accept it.. however if it's not what we are going for here, then i suggest we nip this in the bud before the front page just becomes a complete list of "teases" and "links" to paysites. Quite frankly i get enough of them in my email.

Perhaps Gary you could clear this up for me....

    TIA

That is very common in the news groups

It is a form of advertiesment. I as a rule do no pay for my erotic entertainment. I don't mind a person making money but it is just not in my budget.

I do agree that I hope that will not become the norm on this site.

I already have a large archive of half done storys never to be finished.

Looks like Jinn has addressed this in the following thread:

Try to think it this way: your half-done-story archive may be much smaller if authors are properly paid. It's too bad that authors can't get any money from this site, and most of them don't even get story review/comment from readers. What a sad truth.

I was going to make an impassioned plea on behalf of authors of quality erotica everywhere but, frankly, I just couldn't be bothered. I said my small piece in the review where alittlebitbent said the story was good but gave it a one.

    Jinn speaks wisely.

This could be a worry, but everyone is entitled to her own search for happiness and $$$.

However I can safely say that NOT ONE of those teasers elicited in me the slightest desire to look for the missing parts. Commercial erotica is so self-censored it is to be pitied.

(well, there were those scrumptious excerpts posted by a guy called 'Zool' on the newsgroups... but they were on the newsgroups!)

I don't much care for incomplete stories so I would appreciate some indication that a "bridge out" looms ahead, inviting the reader to happily drive off a cliff.

I suppose there is some interest in seeing a story as it is put together, but one problem with that approach is the difficulty in editing for consistency and continuity after the fact. A burst of inspired plot alterations in chapter 12 isn't much good if the first 11 chapters are set in stone.

I never post an incomplete story, nor do I go back and edit afterwards. It stands or falls on its own merit. The one exception is the sequel, which by its nature depends on What Has Gone Before in a Galaxy Far Far Away. But even a sequel should be logically self-contained, with its own plot and a clear resolution.

If someone wants to post teasers as advertisements, fine, but make it clear right at the top.

I must admit I find all of this rather amusing

There are now two threads and the self appointed guardian of freedom of porn (Asmallbent) is obsessed. I did accept his apology via email but now believe I should reconsider as I think I was just too nice.
I think this whole teacup storm is laughable.

However, I do find the hypocrisy of not paying for erotic entertainment to be even more amusing.

That is, however, entirely another discussion.

This is not intirely on topic and will no probly earn me a spanking

from the moderators but here goes any way.

Jinn how about a new section of the library intled Storys of the dead. Were there are listed good and some times great storys that have not been updated or finished for over a year. And are open to be uptated or finished by talented authors who are willing to pick up the torch of plagerism (there is another Ism that i am not for) and update or finish the story. I can think of a couple of dozen storys that i would enjoy reading again.

I now return this thread to its original topic.

    No spanking this time Mobius!

Sounds like an interesting idea, but who would go through the thousands of stories and catalogue them? Jinn doesn't have time for it... perhaps you, being the King of Smut, could volunteer?
I agree, it's always frustrating to find a story that hasn't been completed.

    Sade? 1980's singer?

I am rather hopeful you are referring to our favourite Marquis? rather than a line in Sweetest Taboo?

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for in anything in life. And that is rather a fact, no matter what obscure quote you choose to support your vague rationalisation.

Um..yeah, but one is usually aware that it needs to be paid for from the minute they start using it! Like, you wouldn't get half way through a meal, thinking it's free and then be told that it isn't have you have to pay for the rest...i think that was bent's point, rather than 'i want everything to be free'.

Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade's philosophical contribution goes way beyond the introduction of the flogger as an erotic accessory. He put conventional ethics, including your own mercantile one, upside down with forceful argumentation. I will not trade 'obscure' quotes with you, as I suspect anything written in Sade's brilliant, incisive language will be obscure to you, and I will not discuss 'vague' rationalisations with somebody as blissfully ignorant of his works and legacy. Go on diddling your fetishes. You can even call yourself a sadist - treason was, for him, a cardinal virtue, and he loved the girls who do it for money.

I can roll my eyes up, too.

Whoah, there. Let's all calm down a bit, okay? *glances sternly from jeanne to Carmencia, tapping his palm with a paddle*

Whilst I agree that authors should get something out of their work, I think that people should at least be told they'll have to pay to get the rest of the story. I can guarantee that anyone who found a program that was essentially labeled freeware (this is a free story site) and then found out 5 days later that it needs to be registered would be a mite pissed off. Jinns solution is akin to labeling it shareware, so enjoy what you have.

That said, I think we should take a leaf out of the Open Source Software initutive. If you like it enough, consider a donation to the Author. I don't mean for little stories, but for something more novel-length... It's just an idea though. A paypal account and a few cents here and there all add up!

    Calm down?

Well I don't take kindly to my comments - yet to come - being labeled in advance 'vague' and 'obscure'. Surely some lively response is not against the rules.

    Purring... for now.

My dear, you appear rather upset

Lord Douche (could you not have found a rather more appealing name?) is correct except I did not know at this site that was the requirements! Perhaps Jinn should post that in the FAQ!

Now that I do know, I will keep it in mind if I choose to post further work here.

And I'm all for some lively response here - god knows this forum needs it!

Sometimes I think I'm in an old folks home.

Bother! I rolled my eyes again!

LOL. My name is perfectly good, and I quite like it. Plus, reactions like that make it all the better!
