I'm not a computer geek really but you may need to enable Java Runtime Engine - some sort of Java program is needed for most chat things, and it's not always enabled by default in the browser.

yep that could be the problem or your firewall may be stopping you from chat--if installing java engine does not help try turning off your fire wall for a few minutes and try it ---if you connect then you have to change a firewall setting ---also make sure your browser privacy setting is not set higher than med.

Now that is comforting, my laptop got drunk on red wine the other night, and had to get a new one, now I am the proud owner of Vista.
Before buying, I was given a 20 minute lecture on the problems people have with it.
So far, so good, but I miss XP.

I have not had a problem with chat at all.
Sorry I know that was not helpful.

I am also having fun and games with vista, although not that particular problem. A number of my issues have been solved by installing an updated version of firmware on my router. I am sure it will be wonderful one day, but right now it is just the pain (bad sort) which I feared it would be.

lol, yeah...i bought my daughter a new computer for her birthday this year and it came with Vista. this was 5 months ago and i am still fighting with that blasted OS!!! she loves it...but then again she is 8 years old and she could care less about anything other than going to bratz.com. ~laughs~

on a side note...anyone ever see those Mac vs PC commercials? those crack me up!!

like cariad said though, i'm sure Vista could potentially end up being a decent OS...but right now ~gritting my teeth~ i'm just glad i have XP on MY computer and that demonic Vista crap is in my daughter's room LOL!

I'm sure Vista will dominate things soon. I reinstalled XP and kind-ol Microsoft deactivated my CD key for that rebellious act. After too much time bitching the answer was basically a "screw you, buy Vista. " Apparently I'm not the only one. So I pirated XP instead. Vista can eat me especially when I hear about this OS having a sense of nobility and deciding to delete MP3s without the proper licenses.

I'm not so sure I'd want to "submit" to Vista.

Performance isn't the problem. Just be wary of any upgrades to your hardware or software -- Vista can come down hard on you, whether it's justified or not.

Have you tried downloading Firefox as your browser? That is the only way i can get into chat successfully... just a thought!

I am having that problem with software right now. I can download it, but am not allowed to acess the program, saying that I am not a certified user.
Does Vista think that everyone is born an IT specialist, or is this payback for pirating thier old programs.

I think that downloading Firefox is better than changing to an older version of explorer.

If you're not an IT specialist, using Internet Explorer is very unsafe to your computer in any case, especially older versions. You are a lot safer with Firefox. Partly because Firefox actually tries to keep you safe (IE instead simply transfers all responsibility for safety onto you!)

And partly because Internet Explorer is tightly integrated into the entire Windows operating system. If you hack into that browser, you have hacked the entire computer. Firefox is less integrated that way.

But I really don't recommend Vista for anyone in its current form. Just say no. Stay with Windows XP, or buy a Mac.

I recall cariad said earlier in this thread that learning to handle Vista could be an act of technological masochism, and this page from a free information service gives a good instance:

    http://blogs.zdnet.com/Berlind/?p=692&tag=nl.e622

Double dead-end - you're neither sure just what you should click, nor which programs are actually pushed aside by Vista....

I recommend zdnet though, good and alert service on what's going on.

Ya know I actually don't mind Vista tooo much, but I still wish I had XP.

I play World of Warcraft as well as a few other games, I also am a heavy internet browser, When I first got this new comp I tried checking Nick Scipio's webpage and couldn't get it to work for the life of me, I tried a ton of crap, then I fiddles with I for the life of me can't remember and got it. All I can say is that Vista is nice, but very annoying with trying to run programs together, like WoW and Teamspeak, never had that problem on XP.

Wish I could be more help Maid, all I can say is try messing around with your internet browser and see if that helps, try also going to Tools in your browser then options, from there just be careful.

Hope you get it to work.

Oi! Forgot to add, you might want to install Mozilla firefox (don't bother with any of the addons just the internet browser) if you already haven't. I have found it runs a little easier than the current IE does.
