Furthermore, the top menu seems not to be working on some pages, and the shelf options on the right of a story are gone.

    hai!
just wanted to say 'Thanks' to all the admins/mods working on the problem.

This glitch has made me realize that not only do I have WAAAAY too much time on my hands (to keep going in to see 'is it fixed yet, is it fixed yet'?) and I am still okay with that. sad really, but certainly says something about the site, yes?

Will be interesting to see what actually caused the 'glitch', but until then thanks to everyone working on it for us so we can continue to use the site.

    Your efforts are much appreciated.

    Thank you,

    ~ openlyrefined

I'll give anybody a break anytime, Jon... I'm not posting these messages to annoy folks, but to inform them...

On my 'main' PC, I've been using BitDefender for almost 5 years now. I recently built a second PC with leftover pieces (I upgrade my hardware almost every year) and on that one I've tried "AVG Internet Security 8.0"

I must say that it is an excellent antivirus program: easy to configure, clear and understandable interface, a good and fast engine which doesn't weigh too heavy on the RAM and regular updates (every 4 hours).

Both BitDefender and AVG are considered the top-two A-V software, but since BitDefender doesn't have a free version (bar the regular 3-month trial), there shouldn't be any hesitation about which A-V to choose...

By the way, steer clear of Avira (the one with the red umbrella), as that one is leaking like a sift. And I speak out of experience.

The free version of AVG along with the free version of Spybot do a great tandem protection. There are known issues of the two programs bugging each other out on some older computers, but generally, those are two programs I'd suggest for anyone.

I actually have a version of free avast that was downloaded for me last year, by a computer tech, which does a scan of my computer, about 30,000 files or so, every time my computer goes into screensaver. If it finds any viruses it removes them, and then does a rescan, until the computer is deemed clean. I'm very satisfied with it. It is much better than Norton, the antivirus protection I had previously. I got an adware virus when I was using Norton.

    Hope that helps.

I've been using Avira for a year now, do heavy torrenting, never have my firewall up, am totally opening myself up to idiots hacking me now that I say this ... but have yet to have any issues with it at all.

I usually use AVG, but decided to try Avira out on a recommendation from a techie friend and I have to say that for me, I like AVG better, but Avira does a bang up job.

    unable to post new story

I've posted several stories but today I filled in all the required fields and when I click on "send the story" it gives an error, saying I have to provide at least the title and a description. Those fields, however, are filled in.
Has there been a recent change?

Patience not an issue. Just wanted to know that you guys are aware of it. Just glad to be able to get in this far to see that are, which I didn't know earlier in the last two days.

Been there, done that, you'll get it done when you can. Anybody that knows you knows that. It'll be fine.

    Unhappy Unable to read reviews

As you may remember, I am having recurring problems doing things on this site. The most recent (meaning current) problem is that I cannot read reviews. When I hit the 'review it' button for a story it takes me to the normal review page, but there are no reviews on the page. There is a summary of the number of reviews and what the numerical scores are at the top, and an invitation for me to review (or sometimes to be the first reviewer), but no actual reviews to read.

I haven't tried reviewing since this started (to see if I can read my own), but this should be enough of a problem for you to work on.

Wow... to think that I might get 2 full nights of sleep in a row... *faints with surprise*

Again, just so y'all know... features will go up & down as the issues with the site are being fixed--this isn't a science, it's an art. So you may have something up one minute & not the next--please make sure you cntl+c your long posts before you post them (same w/PMs) so that IF the site "doesn't work right" when you post, you can cntl+v (paste) them into a Word doc (or similar program) and save them till you are able to post.

And... contrary to popular belief... T & I don't sit 24/7 in front of a bank of plasma screens with little headsets on while we drink Mtn Dew and Red Bull and munch on Hot Pockets & candy while we decide what to play with on the site today... So yes, we're working on the issues, but like always, they will take some time & experimenting to fix...

    Thanks everyone for your patience!

... trots off to find the sledge hammer, power drill & reciprocating saw... muuuahhhh...

As a poor ignorant European, I haven't the faintest idea what Hot Pockets are...

Coming from a shady neighborhood, I can only imagine big trousers full of stolen goods

I had Avira on my PC for 2 weeks (in combination with ZoneAlarm Pro firewall) in-between the expiration of BitDefender 2008 and the arrival of the 2009 version.

In that week I had the 'good fortune' of running into a Vundo virus, plus a whole horde of troyans which came in thru the back door...

BitDefender 2009 was the only one, by the way, that could get rid of the Vundo, as it's a tough little bastard. It's also the only A-V (for the moment) that runs without hassles on the new Windows 7 OS...

Hot Pockets= Frozen, fake pastry/bread (very fake) formed into like a closed pita pocket filled with some psuedo-pizza filling.

    "...regularly scheduled obsessions..." chuckle

Thanks from here, too, delia, Torq. I know how aggravating it is to try to fix, coordinating between local efforts, server companies, software companies "help" desks, etc, etc, etc. You guys hang in there. We'll wait. It'll be fine.

Ok. Let's try this again... Refer to the thread "Yes,, Site Issues" that is in this Tech Forum area.

Chat is still down. It will go back up as soon as Tiger et al. can find & fix the problem.
