How do I make my avatar pic smaller!

As you can see, although my kitten is really cute (now who could resist those big pleading eyes looking up at them through the bars?) , the picture is really too big. I've tried cropping it, and I tried saving it, I thought, on a smaller canvas size (I'm using a free editor that goes by the wonderful name of Gimp) - but it still comes up too big.

Can anyone help me out to reduce it to a sort of normal avatar size, please?
