Sometimes, it can simply be 'compatibility' of interests. I don't like football (or sport in general) so for me, the chances of finding people I like in football forums are low. It's also possible to be an internet sub without being 'attached' to any one, particular internet dom. The same is true in real life. In other words, simple, plain old-fashioned friendships.
