I have remembered something else I do before I even start proof reading: use the scroll bar to quickly skim the first couple of words of every paragraph. This highlights repetitions and also enables you to see the overall shape of the paragraph blocks. It's also a technique I use to determine whether I'll read an online story or skip it. For example, a story in which large numbers of paragraphs all start with the same words is generally an indication of poor writing.
