The quirkiness is caused by the transition of normal typed text to HTML (web programming) rather than Word, although I too have the new version of Word (at work) and I can assure you I detest it.

That aside, I like to avoid all the issues associated with formatting by just posting my works as .doc attachments. When replying to a post, hit the "Go Advanced" button and then click on the paper clip.
