That's an interesting point of view. My impression is that it's the conservatives who are keeping the internet free (for expression) and untaxed. Conservatives, you see, adore free trade and promoting commerce (hence the prohibition on taxes). At the same time, they support the first amendment almost as vociferously as they do the second, albeit primarily because the first deals with freedom of religion, but they also support freedom of the press, freedom to assemble and (to a MUCH lesser extent) freedom of speech.
I know, there's that whole Dixie Chicks flap and the burning the flag thing but, on the whole, liberals are much more prone to start screaming,"Hate speech!" and (religious fundamentalists aside) to call for censorship. Liberals invented political correctness (which, thank god, seems to have died a well-deserved death), which was nothing but an insidious form of censorship.
By the way, I'm an ACLU supporter (though sometimes they drive me crazy).
