I have never had a problem with those that suggest I could do a better job in the grammar, punctuation department. But as I have pointed out in earlier posts,I do not allow these grammatical matters to block my writing of stories.
I know some reviewers are academics or have advanced degrees in English
and sorry to say they enjoy an advantage I wish I had as far as grammar
and the like are concerned.I well remember over the years in various composition classes in school and college, the great frustration of being told to write as I talked, yet when the compositions came back, they were often covered in red ink.Yet I had followed the very instruction to -write as you talk.Go figure

QUOTE=H Dean]I can't understand why anyone would be upset at a harsh review so long as it was based on the merits of the story and not due to disliking the story's subject. While personal taste does have a lot to do with a critique, it should not, necessarily be the overwhelming factor in the story.

Personally, I dislike snuff, pedophile and incest staories. If I do decide to read one I do not allow those factors to come into play in my review. If it was a well told story I review it that way. Otherwise, Lex Ludite and Mad Lews would get big fat zeros when I read their stories.

Frankly, I post because I want critisism. I want to improve. The only way to do that is to step back and hear what other people say. So, I am with you, Ozme. Feel free to trash any of my stories - hammer on the grammatical errors and context issues. Do what you have to do. I want the reviews.

I agree with this as long as you are just not out to totally destroy the author--I mean if the story has merit --you could always say ---I enjoyed the story and I suggest you get a proof reader to help make it more enjoyable ---or you may just need to use spell check ---because the spelling errors in your story distract from the story itself---there is no need to just tell an author that his or her story is shit ---that they wasted their time writing it ----hey they are publishing their stories here for you to read for free---if they all were pros you would have to pay to read them---so cut them some slack as they are learning and constructive criticism--should be welcome.
