Yes - because it is very possible to associate specific forms of pain with pleasure in the submissive's mind. As long as the pain is administered in a manner and at a level that doesn't cross over into "this is no longer fun" territory, it is indeed possible to take a sub to orgasm just with the careful application of pain.

No - because if that association between pleasure and pain isn't made (Russell's method is a classic) then the pain is just --- pain. Yes, endorphines will be released - but the sensation will not induce a pleasure response. The Dom's role is to take the submissive to the place where the pain becomes pleasure --- and constant reinforcement of the pain/pleasure stimulus makes the association of pleasure and pain an automatic response in the sub.

There are caveats of course - going past the point where the pain induces a pleasure stimulus is possible - that point is the edge people talk about. Sometimes it is useful to go beyond that edge but care must be taken or pain will become the operative sensation over time - a form of reverse conditioning, I suppose. The pain/pleasure divide is very much a mental thing <grin>.
it is a mental thing i agree which is why im surprised that Sir_Russel says that few subs can cum by pain alone, if ive been anticipating or even just fantisizing about it then as soon as the pain starts i often cum ...its common knowledge that the only way some women cum is by 'making' themselves whilst having sex and that is a mental excersise.

i disagree that when good pain turns into bad pain it isnt pleasurable for some, again its probably mental for if that happens whilst the pain is a bad none pleasurable pain that in itsself can be very pleasureable!
for me personally often that makes me cum even more, even quicker and conversely the pain i like least is the pain i like best and surely im not the only one??

an afterthought...as Whippet (if ive understood you correctly) ive often wondered whether pain can
become an almost neccasary ingredient for those who enjoy it,and if its pretty addictive for some, it seems to be for me,ever since i was extremely young and began experimenting i learnt the only way i could fully enjoy it was when it 'hurt' and obviously over time its taken more and more hurt to get that enjoyment ...not sure if there comes a time when that stops?
or maybe thats the answer to thralls original question?

(maybe theres a thread somewhere on that subject? it would be interesting to know peoples opinions)
