More than a year ago I'd been a member of hogtied.com (same group of sites) and I'd kept some videos I downloaded from there, and plainly their motion was much smooother than in these new ones, even though it was the same type of video - wmv - and the bitrate of data is higher in these recent vids.

This morning I happened to find the reason; noticed a small tag "in hd wmv" on the site. HD WMV is a new codec of course, an upgarade of standard wmv - the proprietary Microsoft Wiondows Media Player format. But I can't locate a plugin to playback this new quality in WM player (version 10). I'm sure some of the knowledgeable cyber people on this forum can help me with this, though!

you might seriously consider trying another media player, I use media player classic, and have no issues with codecs, the other nice thing about MPC is that you can use it to play back real media, and QuickTime using a couple of plug-ins, if you want to know more about MPC, PM me, and I will send you a link. As far as service pack two goes, I think you are pretty safe in upgrading to it. Also I forgot to mention MPC is a free program. Hope this helps
