Cliches become common for a reason
Elementary education frequently taught that it was much better to come up with something original to say, rather than just repeat a hackneyed slang expression. Maybe this was just a way of the faculty to curb student cursing, but who knows. The point being that use of "truly original" expressions nowadays more often than not is met with blank stares, the receiving party either getting awfuly bored or urging one to just be more direct.

Cliches do tend to help with communication.
