Make Love in the Soft Light of Morning

Make Love in the Soft Light of Morning

    We met through mutual friends
    And got to talking
Eventually you needed to go home and so
    We got to walking
Then we rode in my car for a while
    The radio playing
I let it slip that I found you attractive
    I was just saying
You said you were taken by another
    It was no surprise
But you were still flattered enough
    To flirt with your eyes

And I thought to myself that I’d like to
Make love in the soft light of morning

We parted ways as new friends
    I left you at home
I went back to my own bed
    and slept there alone
It was only some time later
    That I learned some more
About how your boyfriend would treat you
    Behind a closed door
    It’s probably best I didn’t know sooner
    For his own safety
    I don’t generally take well
    To hitting a lady

And it hurt me that you weren’t with a man who would
Make love in the soft light of morning

By the time we met again later
    I’d heard all the facts
    He was long gone somewhere
    Slipped through the cracks
    You were understandably cautious
    You needed a friend
I was happy to be one of many
    Who would lend a hand
But in time our thoughts changed
    You confided in me
A desire for something you wanted
    To feel and to see

And so you asked me one night to
Make love in the soft light of morning

    I was nervous and cautious
    For what you had asked
I knew this was no small request
    An important task
You knew how to fuck well
    But now you needed
To feel something much softer and gentle
    For warmth you had pleaded
I was honored and flattered that night
    I would give you passion
Show you that there’s much more to a true man
    Than mindless aggression

And so I took my time and I did my best to show how to
Make love in the soft light of morning

What came after that is private
    Between you and I
No one else is meant to know what we did
Under the soft light in the sky
Our time together did not last much longer
It was not for all time
I was never meant to be yours
    Nor you to me mine
We have not spoken in a long time now
    We drifted apart
I hear you’ve moved far away from your old home
    To make a new start

But inside I still truly hope that wherever you are you get to
Make love in the soft light of morning

I am not in the habit of attaching disclaimers upon my work. But in this particular case I feel compelled to mention that unlike the majority of my writing that I've posted to this point, this poem is a work of fiction. In fact, though I've forgotten the name, I believe in my subconcious this is more or less based upon a low key independant film I saw several years ago. I know on one level it may seem odd for a writer to be virtually apologetic over something being a work of fiction... but even reading my own work over, this piece felt somehow deeply personal, and so I was compelled to share that it is, indeed, based on no actual event in my life.

I hope that in no way diminishes anyone's enjoyment of the piece.
Mit diesem Herz hab ich die Macht
    die Augenlider zu erpressen
ich singe bis der Tag erwacht
    ein heller Schein am Firmament
    Mein Herz brennt

I loved the text, it had both a tender and passionate feel to it that left me somewhat glad and exposed after reading it. Thank you for posting this I will now look more closely for your words here.

Hummm I thought it was beautiful and a true moment shared with the one that got away....thanks for sharing it.

I wish I had expressive talent.

What a cracker of a poem Timberwolf. It's somewhat Dylanish and would fit well on his Desire album. I mean that in the highest possible praise - I love Bob Dylan's work.

Your praise is much too high gregsta. (Not that I'm planning on giving it back!)
