It's like some kind of national spirit. That's why the concept of USA and people from the country is to many Swedes like an instant joke. It's not that we dislike USA. It's just that taking space and "being somebody" is quite a virtue in USA. Here we have the opposite culture. I must say that I prefer the US way, but maybe I just think that because I don't live there. I always have a blast in New York just because of this. Celebrities dare going the whole way and dare making total asses of themselves assuming their own awesomeness and assuming people they meet will think it to. It just doesn't happen here.
edit: in this respect Japanese culture is a bit similar.
