I suppose technically they're animate, but without the--oh what's the proper word...connection (?) to a human being (or battery pack) they're just lifeless stalks of flesh (or jelly, plastic, silicone, vegetable, etc.). I was too quick to narrow the definition of "animate;" apologies.

I believe "mounted on" could be the words you're looking for. And hey, I guess that's one reason most of us don't feel attracted to necrophilia.
